These are real things, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ice_worm.
They melt at 41 degrees Fahrenheit.

We need giant ice worms to give glacier environments a bit more flavor. This isn't to say that they're boring, far from it. The temperatures outside can kill as surely as anything living in them.

The ice worms could inhabit pockets in the ice that you might accidentally dig into, resulting in fun, and prowl the surface of the glacier in search of prey. While not as dangerous as other giants, they pose a threat to unarmored dwarves. They produce ice sculptures when killed in the same manner as bronze colossi producing statues. They are, however, at best a =superior= statue. It can, however, be decorated, raising it's value higher.

Ice worms are immune to traps and stunning and do not have blood and as such are immune to bleeding. Blunt weapons can shatter parts of their bodies. Ice worms will immediately die if they go underground into the stone, where it is warmer, or into a hotter environment produced on the surface such as a building. They will then melt into water.

Perhaps there could be rumors of a great ice worm or two lurking in the most savage of glaciers and something far worse among their ilk in evil glaciers. Hmm, no idea what that'd be. Perhaps a spikey, evil-looking corrupted ice worm that spits syndrome juice and inflicts it on bite/spike cut that roams about looking for prey?

Wouldn't it be relatively easy to mod in tissue with a melting point of 0°C?
Can't say for sure though, because i've never modded anything ever.

You got me thinking two things now, at the same time.

1. Dune.  Giant worms.

2. Lovecraft.  Creatures frozen in the ice.

Giant worms.
Like the Mongolian Death Worm you mean?
On a related note: Once invaders learn to dig, i expect we might also see animals burrow through soil.
Perhaps we'd be see a stream of tilled earth advancing towards our dwarves before they sink into the earth, leaving nothing but a bloody stain and whatever they held in their hands.

Creatures frozen in the ice.
If i recall correctly, it was a shoggoth that was frozen in the Arctic.
And seeing as how everything instantly dies when a water tile they're swimming in freezes over, we might not see creatures encased in ice any time soon.
A solution could be something like "microcaverns", small pockets of air in a glacier that could contain riches beyond belief or horrors from times gone past.

I was referring to the 'microcaverns' idea, yes. I was also thinking some slumbering titans might be found in these pockets with loot to match. Perhaps they wouldn't be inherently evil and hostile, just territorial and a bit irritated at being woken up?

That's oddly appropriate considering dwarves are Crazy Survivalists living in bunkers.

May as well add the Remorhaz(sp?), or Polar Worms from D&D. Those things are pretty terrifying.

they can just be critters, but I think they would also make a good megabeast template for freezing environs, since they can be killed with !!science!!. and very little else can.

I like the idea of creatures inhabiting pockets in ice. However, I think ice worms are a ridiculous idea, even if they had real counterparts. Why not have more exciting creatures in ice, like yeti.

I can think of ice worms being interesting only if they were nightmareish multi-tile beasts with teeth to drill ice - or dwarfs.

Or you could tame and train them to mine ice for you.  :D
