roguelike starter code
« on: June 28, 2013, 12:23:33 pm »

I work as a DBA and have for 14 years. I can code a little java and C, but its been a while and I can script. I want to work on my coding skills and do it in a way that might be fun. Anyone know of any roguelikes that are open source that would be good for me to work off of as starter code to do my own thing. Not doing this for money or to even post it on rogue basin. I just want to play around with something. Don't really care about the language. There are a number of open source roguelikes. Any that have a generic starter engine Ican enhance?

One of the hardest things with learning a new tech skill is just the syntax and figuring out how to do stuff. Generally if I have something to work off I can get past the annoying and constant syntax issues. Just doing this for fun. Prefer fantasy/rpg style roguelike since I like that. I know there are alot. Anything that is easy for more novice coder to get into? Been in IT along time, so I know how to teach myself new skills. I also have google and a library card if I need to get books to cover syntax issues.

I know being a modder in some games is an option, but I was looking for recommendations. Probably should be a more simplistic code base to get me started.

Although not a pre-built roguelike, there is a fantastic python tutorial that lets you get something up and running pretty quickly.  After I had used that, I had a much better idea on how to program games in general too.  :)

Why don't you take a look at the resident open-source roguelike LCS? It's in the Curses subheading, right above Other Games.

Haven't messed with it myself yet, but it might be interesting for you.

You can take a look at my roguelike engine / half finished game if you're planning on making a roguelike in C++. Though I wouldn't use it as a reliable learning resource :P

You could always start from one of the open source libraries or engines out there, like LibTCOD or Tome4.

I would love to try this with Java. No idea what engine to start with, though.
