Strange Mood trouble
« on: June 28, 2013, 11:42:53 am »

I'm having trouble fulfilling a strange mood.  I'm familiar with what it takes to complete them, but for some reason, the currently possessed dwarf won't budge, despite having all the materials.  I double-checked in DFHack with "showmood" and got the following:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

There are plenty of stones available and none are restricted in use.  I also have crates upon crates of all the other items listed here.  I'm playing in a mature fort (58 years) with plenty of successful artifacts, so I'm not sure why I'm having trouble all of a sudden.

Check the kid's preferences. He might be wanting a boulder of a specific material.

...Then again, that should be the first thing he grabs, not the second.

... Yes, the hugs are for everyone.  No stabbing, though.  Just hugs.

Do they actually demand prefstring items or just prefer them if they exist?

Alternatively, burrows? Personally I would just skewer him with a ballista and be done with it, but I'm not exactly a forgiving ruler. ;)

Alternatively, burrows?

OMG, *headsmack*.  With all my excitement over finding the second cavern layer and a magma pool for the first time, I totally forgot this very, very basic thing.  Thank you for the reminder!  The kid was assigned to the "kindergarten" burrow!  Now he's picking things up just fine :D.

Your dwarves must have a very sad existence.

Urist McMayor: "Wellll, there goes another one... He's claimed the Z -71 Magma Forge."
Limul Managersohn: "Really? But surely you don't..."
Urist: "Yes, round up siege engineers and draw straws. I'll check the schedule to see when we can get the loser a vacation in the statue garden as an apology."
Limul: "If he survives that long. The last time we had to set up a ballista down there, the engineer died of thirst on the third trip."
Urist: "Well, get Doren Ben-Mason started on another coffin, just in case. And a slab for good measure."

Children you rescue shouldn't behave like rabid beasts.  I guess your regular companions shouldn't act like rabid beasts either.
I think that's a little more impossible than I'm likely to have time for.

I'm not aware of that with stones (or wood, or bone types), but a dwarf in a smithing mood may require a preferred metal if you've already made bars of that type in your fort. In a fey mood, they'll even explicitly say 'I need zinc bars!' or whatever (have fun with the resulting zinc short sword...).

I wasn't at all surprised that the actual culprit turned out to be a burrow assignment, though.

I'm just surprised Verdant missed that.  Of course, with his experience at the game I'm not surprised he started thinking at the complex end of the possible culprit spectrum.  Its a hazard I have to constantly watch out for when troubleshooting network problems at work (Is it a bizarre routing loop?  Nope, the network cable went bad so it didn't get link. Derp).
