I am just going to mention things.
FTL can still take years, its still incredibly fast but with interstellar space a trip can still take hundreds of years, thus requiring cyro. (this is assuming its only 1.5x the speed of light or something) Also, I can see every large ship with cyro for emergencies, sorta like life boats today, only they shove the survivors in stasis until some sap reaches them.

The plan was to have interstellar travel was to have close stars not be that far away in terms of time, a week or two to get to nearby stars. If you have large time gaps then stuff like trading on the interstellar level stops making sense. If it takes 10-100 years to get a shipment of ore then why bother? You should just start a mine. If there aren't any nearby nearby metals then you should have brought what you would needed.

So yeah, maybe you'd want to go into cryo for a trip to a distant star but you could get by without.

Or to save your sorry life when you get a hull breach.

Well, you could do it like this.

The energy required for a FTL jump is a function of the mass of the ship and the speed at which is travels. Special installations can be used to give departing ships a boost. This allows for near instantaneous communication (ship just needs an FTL drone launcher) and fairly rapid travel between established systems. Exploring vessels would be equipped with oversized energy plants and engines, so that they can reach a decent speed on their own. Cargo vessels would rely on the boosters, rather than on their own engines. Especially explorer vessels would be equipped with cryo systems, though some of the larger colonizers might have them too.

I like the idea of waking up from cryo with little to no idea of what's going on, and needing to figure out what's wrong as well as survive.

And not just because I thought of it.

Only that it has been done to absolute death now. (the fact that one wakes up in some God-forsaken place with little to no memory of the past)

Hey, we could do what the hitchhikers guide did.
Slow-travel battleship looses most of its memory and its spare. the first due to who knows what and the second by an extremely well placed space-rock. So the people wake up, sorta know there job but dont know there names, ranks, jobs, or anything else really. I suppose language and some skills would be hard-coded by using them so often.

Do you know what this just made me think about? Necrontyrs, from Warhammer 40k. In the most recent fluff version, they lost their "humanity", so to speak, because their mnemonic circuitry got damaged in the 60 million years of sleep (the little humanity they retained from the robotisation process, that is).

Can we be Ancient Aliens? Something like... We wake up, having lost our memories (mostly), and also the murderous inclination our kind was known for. The others are waking up too, and they are still Evil, and we have to stop them.
Regardless of if that get made, this sounds absolutely epic. (And has probably been done before)

EA games is like the dark lord sauron, and the gaming consumer demographic is like gollum.
Sauron makes the precious.
Gollum loves and hates the precious.

Just for the record I lean to the side of meeting up in a space bar. The reason I can't decide is purely because I know some of you guys would like cryo. If it wasn't for that I would have made up my mind on the issue a while ago.

I am going to go to bed and see what the consensus is when I wake up.

I always thought that the first was lost when the ship was hit and the second was lost when the things carrying the replacement failed to account for the hole caused by the space rock.

Space-Bar is fine, too. Games aren't much fun if the GM isn't having fun.

Well, it seems that space bar would be, then. I liked the idea of the cryo more, but the bar thing allows us to roleplay more, I think.

I suppose ontological mysteries will be spared for later.

I'd quite like a game where the people are boarding and repairing a derelict station, managing trade with passing traders while trying to set up some kind of profitable venture and reactivating/exploring parts of the station which have been abandoned for-who-knows-how-long and contain who-knows-what. Possibility of mad !SCIENCE! and dwarven asteroid miners.
GO STSRGATE ATLANTIS!!!
But seriously though, a four player adventure based on the same general concepts of SG Atlantis?

I think it would be a very interesting setting and would fulfill all of the wants without worrying about months of FTL travel.

I too like this idea. If I resist procrastination, and EvilLincoln doesn't choose it, I'd be tempted to have a go at it.
