Downward passages and cavern safety
« on: June 28, 2013, 09:58:48 am »

I'm currently in the midst of securing the second cavern.  I discovered a downward passage, but so far, it doesn't seem like the third cavern has been revealed .  As long as I don't go down spelunking down the passage, things won't start spawning in the third cavern and marching up into the second, right?

Wrong, they are still there.

Haven't you heard of Âsax? I also had a similar accident. When I breached the third cavern, there was already a Forgotten Beast fighting the cavern people. Which means that the Forgotten Beast had come there before the cavern was breached. The "Forgotten Beast blaablaa has come" -announcement is just when the FB comes into the areas you have explored - in my case, that FB was already slaughtering the cave fish men, but I got that announcement only after I had breached the cavern, even if the beast had been there for a while.

Also when you wander in the caverns with an adventurer, or use DFHack's reveal-command, you'll see animals there. They spawn even if you can't see them.

So I guess that if there is a path from the downward passage to your fort, forgotten beasts are able to path though it. At least in a theory.

Ah, good to know, thanks.  I'll floor over it.  The story of Âsax is one of my favorites in DF lore, but I forgot the detail about the caverns.
