Population before: 148

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
16 goblins, 15 bowgoblins and 1 swordsgoblin on a cave crocodile.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
140 Dwarven soldiers, a diaspora of military specialties.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
A few of the soldiers going over the top of their own accord prompted me to send them all in a dwarven wave, the recruits taking in most of the shots.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
It was a messy battle.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
All goblins and the cave crocodile were completely killed.

5 Dwarves were killed, four shot and one struck down. I count 9 wounded in the hospital with a further 11 lying in the snow, all in a critical condition. Of the named Dwarves, only Ruhn was injured - limping away from the fight with a broken leg caused by an iron arrow. The attack was costly, and proved a point Goden has learned dearly. It is preferable to leave the Dwarves in the open than to leave the trenches for the open for as long as archers roam the land.
I fully expect most of the Dwarves in critical condition to die. Amongst them are some good soldiers and craftsdwarves, including one of the jewelsmiths working on the amber vault.
The south eastern quarter will subsequently be fortified, the hospital expanded and the dead Dwarves' equipment will be shared out to the survivors.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
That the babies were born during such a moment of bloodshed is suspect. A strange omen indeed.

I quite agree. Like, have I killed anyone yet? Am I a legendary soldier yet? Probably not the latter, but doesn't hurt to ask. Maybe you could just post a screenshot of all our general 'v' screens, along with extra info like wounds and kills.

I really like the story so far. Keep it up!

Three Dwarves were devoured by the mine-sealer Sarek, the great spider was slain by Diana.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
We watch her out of fear that she may truly be a god of the hunt.
Many Dwarves are unhappy, they find our leadership lacking in tact after watching many Dwarves die before them.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Marksdwarf Grombardin assures me that the marksdwarves of the contested books can be counted on to quell any uprising. Only a mad Dwarf would revolt after minor setbacks, one Dwarf has gone mad so far.
In a meeting with the surviving Captains, I noticed the lack of two Captains. Captain Catten Scouredgild was hospitalized with a broken spine and several lacerations, his injuries will leave him with no choice but to accept promotion to militia instructor. The second Captain injured was Captain Ruhn.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
His chances of recovery are uncertain.
I have heard it be recommended that Shadow Gurast take his place should he fall, but recent developments in his mental health suggest it be wiser to wait longer and pray for Ruhn's good health.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Some of the recruits support us.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
'Support' used economically. They accept our policies as necessary to surviving the Blizzard of Death.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Others speak amongst themselves that perhaps things could be better with a new mayor, a new life underground - anything but the trenches.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I requested that Captain Matoro find these Dwarves and begin acquiring a list of all the Dwarves who wish to live underground and abandon the trenches. They will have what they wish for.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Ms. Willsauce  was affected by the death of several patients. She sought the mayor for consolation, the mayor was unavailable due to fighting in a riot he started in the drink stores. She saved one Dwarf's life by stitching his cheek back together. Another Dwarf had his ribs sewn together by another doctor on the advice of Ms. Willsauce. Surprisingly this worked, and should become standard medical procedure.

The hardships of the blizzard are taking its toll on the people of Amberfortune. Those who cannot adapt will die, those who survive will bare the steel and skills the fallen lost. On a happier note, I have forged the Fort's first home-made steel spear, alongside a plethora of copper spears and 3 of iron. All soldiers now carry weapons of at least metal quality. It will be interesting to see who survives when the fights begin, with each brawler carrying coppers in their hands. The stalwart soldiers will move into the command bunker - its first floor nears completion. This season has claimed 11 Dwarves. More will follow.
- Commander Goden, the statue must first be carved.

Exodius, your Dwarf is up there.
I may have asked that already but I did not find out in the slightest... What weapon is my dwarf using?

One of the lucky few to have been issued a steel sword.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Ruhn Seawinds appears fine after being discharged, with no long term health effects other than severe alcohol withdrawal.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The foundations of the Amber vault and the command bunker are well set, the scaffolding for the next layers completed. All that is required is for the rest to be covered in ice, and soon the structures will be carved properly from the ice.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The stronghouse where the rodent residents are being kept is complete. Marksdwarves patrol there for their own protection ever since the rodent babies escaped.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Some of the Dwarves got the wish to move their residence underground into the caverns.

Please rename Diana & Ruhn's children: Adil to become "Heracles" and the other to become "Pan".

Hey Ruhn - You should be known as "the God of Thunder"  You really should - that'd strike even more terror into your enemies and I bet everybody would give beer to a God in appeasement!

Ha ha oh wow, just thought it was worth mentioning that one of the patients in the hospital just went insane from sleep deprivation. First time for me.

*EDIT
It keeps happening. Another Dwarf went insane, then another, both in the hospital. The second went berserk, limping out of bed with an iron battle axe and a shield, one in each hand. Lolor the berserk lye maker cornered the woodcutter Dodok, sneaking up whilst Dodok was operating on the fishery worker Dodok [recovered from the battle with 4 arrows still embedded in him, still embedded in him at the time of death]. Fishery worker Dodok was swiftly killed by a surprise iron battle axe to the head, Woodcutter Dodok fighting bravely to escape, fleeing after jumping over Lolor the lye maker.
Lolor is dead now, death determined to be caused by the ends multiple spear points. The hospital is a maddening place.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Another FB attack happened. 9 Swordsdwarves, 10 speardwarves and 10 marksdwarves were sent to deal with it. A fluffy crab with accompanying poisonous gases, I wanted to see what damage the new recruits could do before the poisonous gas did its damage to them.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The crab prostrated itself before the feet of the recruits and was immediately set upon with vicious copper blades, iron bolts and alder wood swords.
Surprisingly they killed it.
With no injuries sustained.
The crab didn't even vent any poisonous gases.
The victory was so flawless as to warrant accusations of cheating.
To top it all off the Dwarf to score the killing blow was Limul the Stalwart.
Limul earned her profession title after shrugging off severe blood loss after the Crazed Siege, not even bothering the hospital for help - she walked off her wounds.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
She also killed a forgotten beast with just one hand.

Assault on the Deep Fortress viable: Operations are go.

The Dwarves assembled in the newly constructed throne room, the sound of the iceworks above mingling with the murmurs amongst the meeting. Mayor Coldbones was sitting opposite of Commander Goden; Mayor Coldbones and his rose gold table against Goden and his red tourmaline table. The nobles and militia captains were lined up on either side of the head tables.

Mayor Coldbones called the meeting into session, waving the diplomat at the door away. This was not a meeting for those outside of Amberfortune's command.
'The Elves have seen fit to supply us with a male giant Bobcat. I have been informed that under Captain Aban's guidance we shall hope to be seeing the first litters within the year.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

'They've sent more than ever before; yet appear to have taken grave insult when we offered them a sock enameled with wood. Broker Ber Ingisham and I have been led to believe the Elves have been looking for an excuse to embargo us and deprive us of food and spirits. We will no longer entertain their merchants, we have their warcats - we need them no longer.'

'Commander Goden, I hear you minted some coins to commemorate this embargo?' Captain Ruhn said. On cue, recruit Zuglar threw the coins into the center of the room.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

'I hope it pleases us all. There is more at hand to discuss, however. Due to the death of all 3 expedition Captains, the expedition Lieutenants and their Sublieutenants I shall defer the report to the newly promoted Sublieutenant Trif on the status of expedition Westboat.'

Trif strode forward from behind Captain Likot, throwing a token bag of the beaks, horns and teeth of the conquered defenders atop the pile of coins.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

'Over thirty Dwarves originally embarked on expedition Westboat, we had Marksdwarves, Swordsdwarves and Axedwarves in our number, with attached combat engineers and surveyors to help our exploration of that black Fortress, Gibbon, first uncovered by our exploratory miners. The southern approach appeared to be either impossible to scale or else require too much straying from the stairwell, so we descended the Western ramparts to bypass the impenetrable rock of slade.'

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

'In the Western rampart we first encountered the... Resistance.'
'When was this?' Mayor Coldbones interrupted.
'10th of Malachite, 326. Maybe the 11th. It was not too long since our departure from Well's Central. We made a good showing of ourselves, even the arrival of a Troll couldn't stop us for more than an hour. We were making such headway, we found the entrance to Gibbon. The engineers cleared the way.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
'It surprised us how fierce and how numerous these little penguins and great yaks could be, slaughtering the cavern's inhabitants with ease. We approached with all the caution in stock, even with the knowledge of our earlier victories.' Trif let out a short laugh, only joined by the survivors of expedition Westboat.
The meeting hall grew silent, even the iceworks above were finished prematurely by the impending blizzard.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
'There were too many, I know that now. We didn't know that then, not until we opened the tunnel.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
'To hear a thousand squawks and live, to see that we LIVED ON IT!
Commander Goden interrupted Trif before he descended into hysteria.
'That is where most of us came in. For those who stayed above ground to guard the iceworks and the trenches, I alongside 70 Dwarves intervened and began the siege of Gibbon. Over 30 Dwarves dead-' Goden motioned to Muscle Medic Willsauce.
'With 13 more in critical condition. 6 will never walk again, almost every Dwarf that walked into Gibbon left scarred and a tenth of my ward are dead.'
Goden continued.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
'We payed in blood for every room and every floor in Gibbon. Once the wounded have been recovered, we can begin fortifying it for our use.'
Broker Ber began to speak.
'That is perhaps one silver lining. This Fortress is made of walls that defy our engineers. This Fortress is rich, rich in coin and rich in amber as bookkeeper Iteb tells me. We can use Gibbon to house our wealth. We can create the most impenetrable vault to have ever graced the subterranean world.

Trif looked up to see a panicked soldier inform him of some bad news, his face reflecting the hard truth that his wife was about to be the first Dwarf put on trial for murder.
Another Dwarf ran in even more panicked than the one before - the Fort was once again under attack from the depths. The captains picked up their weapons and readied for war.
Mayor Coldbones spoke out.
'No, tell the one accused of murder - Cog, tell her to get ready to fight. It shall be a trial by combat, and this invader shall be Amberfortune's prosecution.'

All things considered, incredibly well. She managed to leave Gibbon with only bruises, and earned her some kills too. She's also sound of mind, so she's one of the soldiers on guard to watch and contain any soldiers that snap and go crazy (the guards walk in groups of 3 so they've got good odds)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Also, good to be back :P

Heh.  That's pretty freaking awesome, all things considered...  When i read about the clusterfuck that was Gibbon, I was all like "heh, slaughter-fest, neat" until I realized that Grom was a Marksdwarf on active duty ;P  Speaking of, how close am I to Legendary Marksdwarf right now?
