Poll

What should we tell the mountainhome?

A - Long live the King, Baron up and join the mountainhome for good.
B - Long live our own ends, distance the Fort from the mountainhome for good.
If both votes are tied, RNG decides. A vote placed here will be strategically wasted.

Whenever the option I favor is higher than the other one would be a good time to stop.

How long are we gonna wait before deciding to continue with the fort?
The Fort has been continuing all this time.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Exploratory mining has revealed many gemstones as well as the 2nd cavern layer.

To avoid spreading the army too thin, no forays or passages have been made to it. A few dead pond grabbers indicate that the 2nd cavern layer might be home to stronger resistance than the first layer.

With that said:

It is also home to this peculiar tunnel, and as such an expedition will be planned to see where it leads to. While it would be unwise to attempt to hold all the cavern layers and the surface when goblins are expected to arrive, it would also be maddening to not seek what is hidden below.

The vote ends the moment the diplomat begins the second round of talks.

We should relocate the rodent couple to a new cell in the downward passage. That way they will be more comfortable (being above ground constantly must be Hell for them), and they can defend us (or at least warn us) if some critters wander up from the depths.

I'm having to keep patrols up against giant cave spiders in the first layer, I doubt they'd be able to survive alone in the second. I'm sure they're comfortable enough with a roof over their head.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The passage descends 16zlvls from the 2nd cavern layer to the 3rd. A mine has been called to dig out a path onto land so the expedition can continue; mayor coldbones has been sent back to the surface in case something goes wrong and the scouts are too far underground for the soldiers above to intervene.

For some reason I had a feeling there'd be one of those down there. This is going to be awesome.

Coldbones got replaced as mayor by Captain Ineth Lalturrovod. The diplomat felt that all of her talks had been wasted and left for home. A gremlin thought it would be funny to punch our resident giant bobcat; it was funny and it was bloody. The Avuz expedition was called to an end early; the expedition went deep into the tunnel where it spilled out onto a lake. A bridge was dug out to cross the waters and beyond this lake we heard and saw the scampering of feet - the innumerable undead hordes of penguins that stretched out for as far as the eye could see. Penguins are not native to the blizzard of death; they were either taken here or else are from a time where they once lived here. The Fortress looks to be formidable, almost impenetrable. Many feel uncomfortable knowing that so many live below us, yet I wonder if they fear what lives yet deeper still.

The time to attack the Fortress is not now. A greater threat looms closer to home.

Can I ask for the weapon of choice of my dwarf? And renew request to claim the Cotton Candy Longsword? (How do I know it is a longsword? Clairvoyance.)

A greater threat, you say?  I say we cage that beautiful beast and unleash it on the Fortress below us!

BTW, if the diplomat left, does that mean that we default to breaking away from the Mountainhome, or does it just postpone the decision?

An undead horde of penguins is not something to be squandered. We should capture all of them and unleash them on a goblin siege. That would be hilarious.

I cannot allow anyone to claim the sword until the time is ripe, and in any case the most likely claimant will probably be the best swordsman what with its claiming likely culminating in the certain destruction of the Fortress.

It is a giant spider with wings. Maybe if I had time beforehand to prepare a trap it could be captured, but even if some nifty webwork or cave ins were employed last minute it'd be unaffected. Considering it's flying towards the chopping fields with the borehole to the surface at the heart of it - attacking it in the caverns is key and must be done immediately.

Postpone.

This is also always an option, as difficult as it may be.
