Electrum is a worse armour material to copper, but he wears it nonetheless. It is too dashing to neglect.

If you can keep the rodent-men tame enough, their progeny will remain tamed automatically.  It's a valid military tactic called "conscription of the locals"
I will attempt this to repopulate the caverns. I've never attempted breeding captured sapients before, so this should be a new venture.

Send Kib out to the wilderness, to purge himself of his disease or die trying, and focus our medic's efforts on the one who might come through intact with a little care (namely Iteb).
Everyone has all of the healthcare labours active. In his own way Kib has done his service for the Fort, training all in the ways of healthcare by staying alive for so long. It'd be a shame to dump an unconscious soldier out in the wilderness for no discernible benefit, especially since that is a potential hand that can dig more gems for the Fort.

It's very simple to make the rodent-people your pets using a Dfhack command: You press "k" and put the cursor on the unit you want to be friendly to your civ, but don't select them.  Then you type "tweak makeown". into the Dfhack command prompt and that changes their loyalty to align with yours.  Works on animals, FB's, Titans, caravan animals (which is hilarious), possibly on the caravan wagons themselves while they're moving, but most certainly the traders and their guards.  Doesn't seem to do much for immobile things like trees or hives, and it seems that vermin are likewise immune (yeah, no weaponized rat swarms - sorry.  You have to stick to catsplosions for those.)

Thing is, I don't think they'll breed after that, so if you pit them together and separate them from their progeny, then "tweak makeown" the progeny when it grows to adulthood - that might be a viable method of conscripting them into a "mamluk" soldiers.

Oh DFHack, right, I haven't used that particular command.  I'll have to wait until I capture some more molemen to try it out.  Too bad you can't give them a pick and a miner's hat....

*ahem*  In that case, maybe you should consider making an isolation ward for contagious infections?  Assuming that's even possible (my best Fort lasted one whole year until a Fey Mood demanded cloth, couldn't find any, went batshit and promptly turned my Fortress into a remake of Battle Royale)

As to the Skaven...  I just checked the wiki.  They don't reproduce.  Ever.  Keep'em in the cages and see if you can't trade them away to the Elves or something.  Looks like we'll need to find us a different group of sentients to enslave.

This post is of the lowest craftderpship.  It menaces with spikes of fail and brain-lag.

You cannot sell non-tame animals, they will break out of cages, I speak of experience (you did not play df untill you saw a non-tame giant badger eat couple elves alive^^).

As for children i think you need to add ONE tag to them, once again no idea which....

[CHILD:xx] where xx is age at which they grow into adulthood^^ now to double check if it is only change neccessary to make them breed... Apparently adding [PET] or [PET_EXOTIC] could help...

FOUND THE LITTLE BASTARDS! So, if my theory is correct (in other words make a backup of the save before trying) if you go to the regions raw->object->creature_subterranean ctr+f rodent until you find rodent man and place [PET_EXOTIC] and [TRAINABLE] underneath [CAN_LEARN][CAN_SPEAK][LIKES_FIGHTING] you should be able to tame and train them for both war and hunt^^ I love this game^^

Conventional infection as opposed to syndrome infection; this one was caused by lack of soap not an evil beast.

Rodent men have the child tag. I'd be surprised if they didn't, though I don't know how hostile sapient breeding works exactly.

We might want to see if anyone else has ever bred a friendly civilization before we plunge into the raws...  If they can be enslaved as-is, we should be fine.  If not, we might not have any choice but to add the pet tag.

jeez, i put all taht effort into 5 mins of reaserch and people ignore me...

YOu cannot enslave races without pet tag, although elves apparently can, they may sell you tiger man and stuff^^

Hmm.  Yeah, missed that in my upset at having failed at reading the wiki, sorry 'bout that.

Also, the DFHack thing is probably the best way of enslaving the rodent-men, since editing the raws seems like it'll just mess everything up (worst-case scenario?  Rodent-man version of Cacame Awemedinade.  Which would just be awkward)
