What should we tell the mountainhome?

A - Long live the King, Baron up and join the mountainhome for good.
B - Long live our own ends, distance the Fort from the mountainhome for good.
If both votes are tied, RNG decides. A vote placed here will be strategically wasted.

Ok I am done being bad at humor for today^^

Snow more puns! Ice can't take em anymore! (By the way, this fortress rocks.) However you should bone up their personal armors with a tanner/leather worker/bone carver/armorer.)  Please dwarf me as one of the female dwarves and get her making leather and bone armor for her menfolk - call her "Diana" (Profession: Goddess of the Hunt).

Also, did I spy with my little eye a door in the pic of the reindeer pit?  So the "no doors, no constructions" thing only applies to dwarves, huh?  Cool idea.  I'd suggest building/placing some traps out on the periphery as an early warning system for food/invaders.  Build them along the tracks left by former thieves and no more will you need to lose your precious metal babies.

I might actually take up that bunker idea!

And while I'm doing my rounds:

Welcome to the draft.

Also, did I spy with my little eye a door in the pic of the reindeer pit?  So the "no doors, no constructions" thing only applies to dwarves, huh?  Cool idea.
Yep, it's the only door in the Fort. It's more to keep the reindeer in [they're wild] than to keep nasties out.

I'd suggest building/placing some traps out on the periphery as an early warning system for food/invaders.  Build them along the tracks left by former thieves and no more will you need to lose your precious metal babies.
Traps won't stop thieves of the Kobold variety, so the only defence of metal babies will come from the vigilance of Dorfkind. I'm also hesitant to rely on traps, but I'll keep that in mind for the caverns.
And on a point of feasibility, the whole map is open. There is little way for traps to cover what only soldiers can.

It appears that the exploits of the goblins havve had an adverse effect on some of the Dwarves. Chief medic Kib has been telling me of a peculiar madness that has struck one of our migrants; she refuses to go by any name but Diana and she has been insinuating that she is a goddess incarnate ever since her baby was kidnapped. Her craftsdwarfship of bone armours and goods are masterworks without match amongst us all, but I am yet to see any other proof suggesting divinity. She remains a valuable soldier however, and I see no reason to commit her to an infirmary. We don't even have an infirmary. I should make Iteb build one.

Following up on the bad pun thing... Who likes short shwords? I like short shwords!^^ This one was particularity bad, me thinks.

As for the bunker, my thought process was that our archers should tie the enemies on range before they get near/into trenches, a dwarven equivalent of machine gun nest if you will...

Yeah, and you could have a ballista pointed at the door, so if something was trying to knock it down, you could just pause/unpause repeatedly (or one step), and then on the same tick that the door broke, order the (already loaded and manned) ballista to be fired. The operater wouldn't have time to run away before he shot it, and you'd get a free point blank hit with a massive war machine.

This sounded like a much better idea before I said it. Feel free to disregard.

Replace the ballistae with catapult... medieval "mobile" mortar^^

Actually, setting up a series of mangonels to fire at walls on opposing trenches isn't a bad thought.  The huge arrows would strike the far wall and drop in, to be used by those mangonel teams and shot back once again.  Stick the process on "repeat" with a number of mangonel teams and you'd have some very interesting "interlocking field of fire" areas.  invaders or other beasties would be diced to smithereens, while the dwarves in the trenches below could then deal with any who happen to actually make it into the trenches themselves - a good deterrent to being overrun by possible invaders...

On a more productive note:

Preliminary extraction of amber opals is underway in the sub-borehole complex.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Hostiles have been spotted, a local tribe of rodent men. They appear armed with spears and envenomed blowguns; until amber opal extraction must absolutely encroach on their lands aversion seems the more profitable path. Must look into finding out how to capture some rodent men specimens.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I have heard of how Onul discovered the first goblin ambush whilst working on the amber vault.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I have heard of how Asmel discovered the second goblin ambush whilst defending Onul.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
During this ambush there were 20 Dwarves, clad head to toe in the finest weapons and armour Amberfortunes owned - and not one of those witnessed these two Dwarves take on every single goblin all on their own, myself amongst the warriors hunting for the cave crocodile below ground.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Their sacrifices, as unnoticed as they were...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Gave us enough time to join the marksdwarves and newly migrated militia in the fight. Some of the Dwarves were actually holding off lashers and archers with wooden swords until we arrived! Can you believe it?!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Sadly since I was not present from the start, the undisciplined rabble had no one to tell them of the designated paths in the trenches, and they lept over like mad dwarves from the start.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
If one thing was fortunate about this raid, is that the elves were forced to witness it.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Once I had taken command, the battle was concluded before its end. Our well-equipped, well-trained elite drew their archers into close quarters and hacked them into messy pieces.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Really messy pieces. In the aftermath 7 goblins had been killed, 2 are unaccounted for and are presumed to have fled. In return, 3 Dwarves are dead, Kadol was wounded fatally by a bolt in the carnage. Our Chief Medical Dwarf Kib Mansionfortunes may also be not long for this world, having held off the entire ambush by himself once Onul and Asmel were killed. How he survived is either a sign of his great fortune, or misfortune.

I'd liked to be dwarfed, please!

A fine, cheap barricade only contested by the bowyer's workshop.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

So far all of the Dwarves that have been Dorfed appear more or less ok; even Exodius managed to survive getting a bolt to his gut. Three other Dwarves, Kib amongst them however, were not so lucky. They died just in time to traumatize all the newcomers.

You could make the walls of this vault out of amber opal windows. As for the rodent people, I think their corpses would make fine waypoints.
