: "Presence is its own stat. And I would prefer to call it an aptitude: after all, it too may be compounded with Luck. Say, to peacefully hold an onslought of demons where they stand."

Look for a Demon Lock on this creature from a distance. If there isn't one, step away rapidly. If and only if there is one, poke it with my foot. If that doesn't work, poke it with my hand. And if that doesn't work, pick it up and shake it vigorously.

((Hm. So Will, Fury, and Charm are standard "1d12+relevant stat" style attributes, I think.

Presence is probably roughly equivalent to level, or at least the defensive, "I'm too important to be assaulted, killed, and/or eaten by goblins" aspect of level/plot importance.

Alternatively it could be the game's only defensive stat, but I haven't noticed any
No, there it is. Presence indeed appears to reduce damage taken.

Okay, so mystery solved. Presence is Stamina/Endurance/Toughness/Armor/The Game's Only Defensive Stat. I'm not sure what the significance of the whole "as you reduce others' wills to live" and "weaker enemies will flee instead of attacking you" bits. Maybe enemies are smart enough to realize when they can't physically damage something.

Luck seems pretty self explanatory.


Presumably the compaction thing means that stats give their full value in combat, and use a much smaller (+1 per 5 full points) scale out of it.))

Make sure to use Aim a few times before entering, it is never a bad idea to have more mana to fight with, especially as your only good attacking ability is mana-based.
