Same people, Atlus has a small MMO division in which they released NeoSteam and I believe one other not-very-well-known MMO. I don't believe either did particularly well, but MMO's clearly aren't Atlus' forte... Well, perhaps it could of been if they had more focus on it, but it seems like they were both something of an experiment for them.

NeoSteam was an excellently designed game.  It had all the mechanics in its favor.  It just seemed like the devs left the server running and would hop on for an hour every weekend to make sure it was still online and speak politely to players but never actually address any issues.

They could probably do a very good stand-alone game, they just didn't seem to have their shit together when it came to maintaining a franchise.

Demon's Souls (predecessor to Dark Souls)
I almost feel like this shouldn't be listed as there's zero chance of a new Demon's souls. Not with the IP tied in a knot IIRC, and Dark Souls being so successful.

No one said there was or should be a Demon Souls 2.  This was just a list of games that they've been involved with, and what you might recognize them for.

Besides that, it can be said that Dark Souls is Demon Souls 2 - you might argue the only reason they used different names was because it wasn't a direct sequel leading to more of the same plot/world.

They just published Demon's Souls. Now the developer uses other means to publish future "Souls" games.

Most people don't know the difference between publishers and developers.

With the amount of interference and meddling I feel developers get from publishers anymore, eh, should you really distinguish when they're under a shit publisher? Begins to seem more important that EA or the likes owns them.

Well, this is dramatic. But it sounds like its not immediately going to crap, so I'm guessing Atlus will probably fare better than thq did.

Yeah, sorry. I was just going down the list of potentially recognizable titles that I could think of that had Atlus' hand in it, however remote.

Yeah I'd say if atlus is making a profit period they're probably safe. It seems like companies in the black in general are fairly rare. Although the distinct amount of VERY japanese games is a definite point, that sort of thing is becoming more okay over here too (although I definitely wouldn't say it's pierced the mainstream, but then again most games aside from FPSes haven't really done that either).

EA buying it would be... ridiculous. I can't imagine EA publishing the fifth entry in a JRPG series that has predominantly featured (admittantly well recieved and handled) dating sim elements from the third entry onwards. And at this point that's about what they're known for besides dark souls. And maybe mainline SMT.

Whoever takes it over would probably do so on the strength of their 'distinct amount of VERY Japanese games' and not view that as a detriment. It's what people expect/want from the brand.

Which one is that? My guess would be Persona, but... Oddly enough, I seem to know more of Atlus' sidelines than their main items. =P

Atlus was the publisher on probably about 1 in every 5 games I own. They're one of my favourite companies because they seem to thrive on bringing over games that are too weird/obscure/niche for other companies to touch. I happen to know that list is incomplete because I have a few of their games in front of me that aren't on it.

If they disappear I guess I'll be buying a lot fewer console games... :/
