Atlus, famous for the Shin Megami Tensei series, may be in hot water. Their parent company filed for bankruptcy today, and is under investigation for dirty business tactics. They are currently going under "restructuring" to stay afloat. For those o you who don't know, Atlus is one of the few(maybe only) subsidiaries of Index not hemorrhaging money right now. If Index doesn't get its shit together and no one buys Atlus, this could be the end of several great videogame series. Even if, YHVH forbid, Atlus goes under, games already coming will still be released. We'll still be getting Dragon's Crown and SMT IV(If you're in NA, Europeans are pretty much fucked. But when are Europeans NOT fucked when it comes to dealing with Atlus?)

Personally, even if Index does go under, Atlus is too well known to not be bought by someone else. SMT/Persona(If you bother making a distinction), are pretty much FF and DQ level big. The question is, who will take the prize? Who will be out Messiah? I'm thinking Sony or Nintendo.

Watch as EA buys them and all is lost.

I doubt it. Atlus feeds on the tears and broken spirits of players. EA can't feed this ravenous beast.

Here's hoping Nintendo buys them out. Nintendo loves Atlus!

If Atlus is actually black ink on the balance ledger, they will survive in some form even if their parent company falls apart; they are an asset to be sold at auction to recover money.

I enjoy Persona. Hope they do well through this. EA isn't the type to buy up Japanese companies like this, so I'm not worried about that.

And that's what worries us. Will they keep this asset or will they pawn them off? Both have terrible possible results.

Can't think of many big studios besides Enix who would dare to touch something as Japanese as Atlus's work, though. If they're actually doing good financially I could see them getting out of this better off.

They are doing damn well in the 3DS section so i would expect them to be swimming in black.

My hope is maybe Marvelous pick them up though they are in some legal stuff over a attempted illegal takeover for a studio but they been making some good games.

I wouldn't call it 'swimming'... not sure how much production cost in relative terms, but Animal Crossing: New Leaf has sold about 3.9m copies. EO *combined* (excluding the rerelease of the first one, which launched in Japan today) has sold just a little over 1m. A quick glance doesn't show much in terms of numbers on their other 3DS releases.
