afaik you can set up your own servers, so that might not be a problem, maybe it can even be disabled on private servers.

I am more interested in the single player campaign anyway. :D

The trailer/PDF for the 300 got me really interested in this game, but looking more closely at it, I get a sinking feeling I won't be able to afford to have fun with the game.

Maybe I'm wrong, but some players getting a large ship for free that also apparently respawns, for a mere $1250... seems not like the kind of direction I'd like a game I play to take.

Apparently there will be a timer on those respawns. It will probably need some balancing, but it seems salvageable, and the amount of people with such ships as opposed to the hordes without should balance things out.

I'm not so much concerned about the ships themselves, but the attitude their existence implies. If the devs are okay with that, then it doesn't give me much confidence in what else they'll be okay with.

Edit: Let me rephrase this and say it better. Correct me if I'm wrong, but these vessels are some of the largest in the game, yes? So these 300 people basically will never have to worry about their ship choice, throughout their entire playing time... (unless they really need one of those carriers or something)

That sounds like a lot easier method of playing the game than having to worry about your ship.

Yah, it sounds like minecraft with content, you have obviously missed the point, people dont like content, they like different coloured blocks.
Seems to work fine with my copy. As soon as I loaded the human caravan came by and the world burst into fire.

The only difference between Lifetime Insurance that backers get and the in-game insurance is that backers don't have to pay in game credits for it.  Outside of that cost, which we don't know the magnitude of, it's functionally the same.

it is possible to lose your lifetime insurance. The devs are ONLY doing this 'buy the ships with IRL bux' thing due to them trying to raise money for the game since theyre 100% forgoing their investors and doing it entirely crowd funded. LTI is a perk for supporting the game this early, but by being a complete clod you can lose it. Aka "Ohh man those pirates stole my ship again for the 4th time this week!! Give me another one please, I got this friend in fringe space who REALLY needs a crate of cahunas..".

Once the game comes out you can only purchase credits with real life money, which won't be infinite (ala Eve Online and PLEX), but capped.

Life Time Insurance has its limitations. There is a cooldown period in between claims and the more frequent you make claims within a specified timeframe, the longer the cooldown period becomes. The insurance does not cover equipment, upgrades, and cargo; only hull is covered. Also each and every ship needs to be maintained, logistically speaking. So that $1,250 corvette will cost pretty penny even in hangar fees and fuel. Owning one and being able to use one at all times at minimum costs are two different things. Chances are these ships will be parked unless there's a need for it to be deployed due to their high running costs.

There are larger ships in the game, such as Bengal Carrier.

EDIT:

This game is not about owning "the most badass ship". Each ship is specialised into something.

A fitting comparison is the Titans of EVE Online. While they are the largest ships in the game, they have limited use and cost much to operate. A chain is only as strong as its weakest link. A Titan is only as good as its support fleet, comprised of smaller ships. The Idris corvettes in SC will need support from much smaller ships, be it as escort or fuel carrier, all of which can be obtained in game.

And many ships are multi-crewed, including the corvettes. So even if you had one, you'd need to muster up players to crew it together effectively. Even if you don't own one, you can crew one, or land on one, or destroy one. Think of it as a "communal" ship, paid by the owner to accommodate the need of many.

Population wise, there are only 300 Idris corvettes sold out of 200,000 registered players so far.

Yeah, anyone flying around a capital ship on day one is tempting fate, since it'd be under-equipped and poorly piloted.

The insurance does not cover equipment
To clarify, it does was specified in that livestream last night that it also covers default equipment. Which isn't much more than base hull (it's literally the stuff in the specs for those ship models), considering the customization oriented approach they're going for.

What I do like about the (limited) ship pre-purchase model is this: On release, there will be interesting battles. The universe doesn't start from scratch, but will have those bigger ships engaged in pvp combat from the very start. Not everyone will have an Idris (they capped those to 200 people; initially 150 before they screwed up the launch time and added 50 later because the first 150 all sold within 9 minutes), but enough people will that you will see ship to ship combat with the full range of ships on day 1.

The game universe doesn't start on day 1; it has a history to it, and as such should have players who own those ships from the start. When it comes down to it, a universe full of nothing but base fighters/base transports for the first month, or however long it takes to get better ships, would be really really boring.

It's also been made pretty clear that bigger != better. Bigger = different. When it comes down to it, the Idris looks awesome. It's a huge ship, with an amazing looking interior and all that. But I would also prefer a small, nimble fighter myself. You can't pilot an Idris on your own; you need (I think it was 9 or something) crew members, be they friends or NPCs, just to fully man the thing (to say nothing of the escorts it would need to keep all the pirates it attracts from capturing it). It seems to me more along the lines of personal fighting style preferences along the lines of PS2's alternate infantry weapons.

In the spirit of unrelated disclosure, I'm actually a dev on the project; though I don't start for another week.  8)

Sure thing! Here's a Retaliator sketch! Though keep in mind, it is a work in progress; these things can change at a moment's notice.

Only two days left to pull the trigger on a ridiculous and expensive pre-order for a game that won't be out for two years.  (I'm tempted...)
