This seems a bit TOO calm...

So, I'm kind of a newbie when it comes to Df, Only on my... 8th successful(aka survived a couple of years) fortress (i think), But this all seems too easy.
the Last couple of fortresses I've made have been in areas marked as "Untamed wilds" (Except for my latest one, which is in joyous wilds. yay!), but it all is so... easy. Food/booze production is easy to get started with, Most of the time My resources are plentiful (except for the occasional flux/Iron shortage), And everything like that tends to be chill. And I NEVER get attacked! No elephants, Giant badgers, Goblins, Hippies, Nothing, except for ONE bronze colossus four fortresses ago, Which was easy to deal with because the caravan guards were "generous" enough to throw themselves (as well as their steel weapons/tons of bolts) at it.
So, I've gotta ask... What gives? I'm reading about Boatmurdered right now, And My fortress...es(fortressi?) seem more like a child's playground than anything else.
So... What gives? Anyone else here that knows my feel? Anyone know why?

Nope, they're all spread over four or five different worlds. The world(and thus, Fortress), is set to max savagery, and high civilizations. They're all 'early' in time as well (the 'oldest' World is on year 256 now, I think). Mineral occurrence is high, if that matters.

Maxing out savagery will result in more Giant creatures and (IIRC) animal-men proportionally, which actually makes it much harder for sentients to survive. It's quite possible you're killing off all the sentient races -- the ones that bring the actually-dangerous sieges -- by "replacing" them with Thrips Men and Giant Capybaras and such. Try turning your savagery back down and see what happens.

Children you rescue shouldn't behave like rabid beasts.  I guess your regular companions shouldn't act like rabid beasts either.
I think that's a little more impossible than I'm likely to have time for.

I always play with extremely high savagery, a ridiculous number of megabeasts, and , but I've yet to see any race become completely extinct unless I was starting with two or fewer civilizations. High savagery + high civilization should keep the gobbos alive.

What's your population cap? If it's very low you may not be triggering invasions/what have you.

Have you doublechecked that you have invaders turned on?

Is it possible that you've been settling mostly on islands? Civilizations need a path to your fortress from one of their sites on the world map in order to show up at your door.

Also, Untamed Wilds isn't that bad unless you get the Person or Giant versions of badgers or keas. Coatis can be annoying too I guess, but it's the keas that are the worst. Back when Boatmurdered happened wildlife was a lot more aggressive than it is now. Elephants won't attack you unless you provoke them, for example. If I'm in the mood for a challenge I try to settle within range of one or more necromancer towers (pink Is on the world map). Necromancer ambushes/sieges are good Fun.

I usually put on 'high' sites, 'cause i thought it was the setting for how many 'good' places there are for YOU as the player, to settle.
What do the 'sites' setting do, anyway?
(oh, and after reading about deadly clouds and neverdying enemies, I somehow don't think a terrifying embark is in my league yet...

I saw a group of giant badgers before, but they never attacked my dwarves... I sent a squad to kill them, for fun.
I've set up shop on islands like 1 or 2 times. I tend to never do that, because aquifers (haven't learned how to remove them yet), so It's mainly mainland stuff.

I, err, don't know what a population cap is, or how to set it... Help, maybe?
And I don't think i remember(I haven't learned) how to turn on/off invaders. But I tend to get "Guests"(Forgotten beasts and a bronze colossi), So I THINK it's on.

Oh, and the necromancer Attacks seem awesome. Any way to find them with the map-searchy-thingy?

What is your created wealth? It needs to be over 100,000 to get ambushes. If you have a simple "new player" fortress, you may not have that much wealth. In contrast, after the first few fortresses, you can get ambushed very early on by making a bunch of serrated steel disk traps....

Remember, imported wealth does not count as created wealth.

Oooooh... så THAT is why it's so easy. I ended like 3 of my fortresses, so I don't know how much Created wealth they had... The one i have now is at 61k though, so that might be why.

I don't know if my fortress should normally be this calm, but I've never been attacked by any siege, ambush, or megabeast yet.  The worst I've had were thieves.

It is the winter of my fortress' 5th year.
My created wealth is 1,319,571.
My city is labelled as a Mountainhome and houses a Queen and a Baroness.
The population is 271 dwarves.  I had 275 earlier, but some were drained by my queen, who is a vampiress.  (All hail our vampire overlord!)
The fortress is located on a main continent.  No island civ here!
There are elves and goblins nearby, but neither have ever attacked.
I haven't yet breached the first cavern layer, but I might soon.
The fortress was built in "Wilderness" savagery.

Do I just live in pacifist world central?  I have five militias, but I've never needed them.  They just train all the time.  I've expected attacks from ANYTHING a long time ago... but nothing ever comes to hurt me.  It's almost a joke, haha!  I don't even get dingos to shoot at anymore since I killed all of them.

I once embarked right next to a dark fortress. They were peaceful with my civ...

One easy way to make the game more FUN is to slightly alter the RAWs for various critters, like making Dragon scale as tough as Candy or poisoning critters saliva. Try Iron Colossi , no really try it. I wanna read your reaction.

Assuming invaders are on for you, too, it's possible the invaders are just taking a really long time to get there. I had a fortress once that didn't see any invaders until something like eight years in. After that first ambush (which brought the goblin general with it, as I recall), I started getting two or three sieges a year.

Ah, I just got my first attack!  I panicked a little because it was a wereantelope (with it's own message and everything) and it spawned next to my outdoor statue garden.  Fortunately, there were armed dwarves offduty at the garden as well.  My axedwarves hacked the wereantelope into little bits.  Still was exciting though!  It turned out to be a cave fish woman.  Hm...
