I turned that off but I assume that the dwarfs that are already generated would retain their stupider-than-usual.
Settings like that require a new world for a change to take effect. Pretty much all of the setting that are not on the first tab.

Ran a test with the Workbench yesterday night. I managed to build this up before the first migration wave came. I had some problems in the construction phase (i.e. a plank got stuck where it shouldn't have and nobody took it away) and animals and people outside were getting eaten by Dragon Raptors, so I guess I can build even faster than that.

EDIT:
New embark, a cave by a river. I spent most my points for a Bloodsteel, flail, scourge and club. I have just a pair of Rats and Shalswars. The first seconds of the game:

The cave got broken and there are hundreds of cave beetles and gremlins scattered above ground. What shall I say, if not THERE WILL BE ONLY OOOOOOOOOOOOOONEEEEE! >:(

What is your workbench doing?

Btw, the cave is not there because the river overwrites it. only one major geological features can exist on each map.tile.

I've already posted what my workbench does on this topic before. Also, if I'm correct the cave was one tile away from the river, maybe it's because it's a large one.

About the embark, my kobolds charged, the animals ran back, and my clubbold got pushed to death by two blobs. Restarted and moved to the other side of the river. Started building a dininghouse. Then migrants came. There's a legendary leatherworker with them. Between them (him) and my camp there is a river and hundreds of cave animals, which will be probably very pissed for the sun now. Wish me good luck. I'm almost done building the bridge.
EDIT: They made it fine. And my clubbold got killed by a blob. Again.
EDIT: Tried a new building design. It's less expensive than making the ramps ring over the building's walls, but the result is an ugly cupola.

EDIT: Now this is a building!

This a Stoneware Bricks Building. The buiding is encrusted with wooden planks, wooden doors and decorated with wooden chairs and tables. It menaces with spikes of wooden roof.
Seriously, I'm making the furniture out of wood since clay doesn't seemingly make sense for some things...

I don't want that thing, not in my dining room. ::)

Cross-posted from Banners of Heart: ☼Masterwork The Fortress☼ game thread.

^ On a processor that old and slow (not likely to have more than 2 cores at that age and speed) you probably would get a small FPS increase from turning off soundsense to reduce the number of processes competing for use of the cpu.
DwarfFortress wants one of your cores for itself and if you only have two cores running other things can slow it down by competing for the use of your limited number of processor cores since your OS will need some time on the second one as well.

Quite possibly so, but then I wouldn’t want to play the game.   :)

This old laptop is connected to H/K SoundStiks.  They’re not great but they sound OK.  I’m sure they’d sound even better if the card wasn’t inaccessibly hard mounted in the subwoofer, as then I’d splice in this unused Lepai 2020A amp.  But they’re still OK and that low note (cue Leo Kottke!) now whenever a dwarf crafts a masterwork reminds me of discovering that low background rumble in Jean-Luc’s ready room when I first hooked up the TV to a stereo.

SoundSense is an easy tweak, and each Spring my fortress hears Randy Newman singing “Short People” (Got No Reason To Live).  There’s a good deal of Pink Floyd and some Homer Simpson.  It’s a changing mix.

Just added a kitchen room. We're at the first migration wave. The legendary leatherworker is still there.

But... Why the grass is always white like that? Is it because of the wind's simulation?

I would post the screenshot in the stonesense thread and ask. And now that I think about it, Kobold Sprites for Stonesense would be awesome. :)

I would, but... Isn't the thread dead or something like that? And yes, it would. Have you any skill with stonesense to make them?

Its not dead? Why should it be dead? They are working on HD textures atm.

I never did anything with stonesense, but I guess it comes down to how well you can paint 2D kobolds. the xml file is easy enough to write.

I just discovered the complete awesomeness that is a Guardian of Armok. I made the offering with a relatively unskilled priest and got only a well crafted guardian (not sure if the two are related or if better quality gives better combat results) and promptly made a sprite inhabit it. I then pastured it outside the walls and within a month gametime got a siege of ~60 undead. Not only did the Guardian put down the entire siege without a scratch but the swordgolem i had pastured with him didn't even get a single kill. With a second Guardian being made as I write this I now feel pretty confident with the tiny military in this fort.

You remember the Bronze Colossus from vanilla DF? The Guadrian of Armok is the iron version of it. Takes down unarmed enemies and wildlife, but if they come with steel it will slowly fall to them.

My weaponsmith just went berserk - apparently she was "forced to talk to a pillar of society" NINETY-TWO TIMES recently. o.O

I think she married him. :s
