((Why is everyone in 1780 English speaking English? ))
((It's like Inglorious Bastards. English has always been the proper language used between two Europeans of different nationalities when they want to speak to each other. It's always been like that. Always. Even the Gauls and the Teutons and shit.))
((I thought that French was the lingua franca for a while.))

Quote
((Why does Latin get to be the big universal language?))
((It's the only language people are likely to know spoken by about the same number of people in each nation, and is the root of many other European lanfuages.))

((Yeah, it was French, but this is an alien invasion we're talking about. French isn't exactly the best Anti-alien-scumbag language when compared to languages like English, German and Russian.

Well yeah, European languages. But we have representatives from non-Latin-based speaking countries and cultures. My character is from Ethiopia, another is from the Ottoman Empire, and we have a lot of other people too. Besides, Latin is already used for everything. If we're going to use a dead language it should be something cool and exotic.))

((Why not?

Does anyone have a better suggestion? Especially since most here are from Europe...))

((Well, French doesn't have any internationally famous phrases that would strike fear into aliens like the other languages I listed.

...I guess Latin could work. Especially if our name was something like "Quod Culus Homicidium: Incorporati" or something.

Soon, news arrived from both the north and the south. Alien craft had been spotted assembling somewhere near Paris. The citizens are expecting a siege. However, armies were also spotted moving into the Italian peninsula. Strange metal fliers, the messengers had reported, were hovering over Florence. They feared that the aliens would soon mount an attack.

The Sultan awoke. He suspected last night had involved far too much smoking, or else his head wouldn't hurt so much... wait, what are these mountains doing here?

Oh right. By Allah. So much for moving to Vienna.

Ten minutes later, in full diplomacy mode, the Sultan arrives in the War Room, suggesting Florence. A tough decision, as leaving Paris to getting razed would turn into a hell of a hangover...

"Alright, the way I see it, we have three options: Save Paris, save Florence, or try to save both. I suggest going to Florence--if our intelligence is good and Paris is going to be sieged, there will be plenty of time to save it later...but Florence is in immediate danger."

((Note that not all generals have to be present at a fight. Should you wish to split your forces, it is a possibility, although it might not be wise to do it now.))

"I say we focus on aiding Florence. If the entire French army isn't enough to guard their own capital, then there's nothing we can do with a mere 4000 men. Or 2000 if we split our forces, which would be more of an insult than ignoring them."

"Excuse us, gentlemen" said a person entering the door with a party of three.
"We've been sent aid you in formulating a plan of action. More specifically, however, we are scholars from Cambridge University. Might we suggest laying the foundations for future buildings on this mountain, such as, perhaps, a lodge?"
One of the men seems to be shivering.
