what just happened? loyalty issue?
« on: June 24, 2013, 06:03:40 pm »

Soo.. I got a dwarf infected by a werebeast and off course he tranformed in my meeting hall. This is at the beginning of my fortress so the only military I have is my starting Hammerdwarf.
I ordered my Hammerdwarf to kill the werebeast but he stopped halfway into the fight to go to the hospital. (if you can go to the hospital by yourself yu can still fight!).
When my idiot military got out of the hospital the warebeast had prooceeded to kill one of my dwarfs AND transformed back into dwarven form.
2 minutes later my hammerdwarf struck the dwarf/warebeast down.

Now my hammerdwarf (civilian) is scared shitless of just about everything. all I get is:
Urist Uselesshammerdwarf cancelles drink, interrupted by EVERYTHING INCLUDING KITTENS.

WTF Happened? Will he fight everything If I re-activate his squad?

Listed as a former member of my civ. And an enemy of my civ. This for killing a werebeast that transformed in the middle of my meetinghall (TWISE).
Still listed among my units though.

The damn thing is armed and has my only set of metal armor. She is currently cornered in one of my stockpile rooms and cant get out because she flees at the sight of anything within my civ...

Yes. Loyalty Cascade.

If you have an older save, revert.

If not, arrange for the hammer dwarf to have an unfortunate accident. Don't kill him with other military units, as the loyalty problem will escallate if you do. Death by atomsmasher, or cave-in, drowning, or magma bath will sort out the mess.

It wont be a problem since i dont have any other military and he is the on ly one with training and has my only gear.

Crap. How very FUN! If I cant contain him its the first time I dont lose to Zombies, Gobbos or clowns.

Best 3 options:

1) burrow in tiny room, lock door, wait for dehydration death. Dfhack clearowned to reclaim items.

2) burrow in anti-elf drowning chamber. Clearowned to get equipment back.

3) lock in sluice-channel that feeds the drowning chamber. Install a fortification slit filter. Run the pressurized water through. He has a chance of dropping his equipment in the current, which should pass through the slit. Clearowned to reclaim items.

Clearowned will only work on scattered items, and the items won't be scattered until the dwarf is dead, at which point they will be cleared of ownership and thus clearowned won't be necessary.

But yes, as the advice goes, lock him up to die of thirst is easiest.

Children you rescue shouldn't behave like rabid beasts.  I guess your regular companions shouldn't act like rabid beasts either.
I think that's a little more impossible than I'm likely to have time for.

Some death items are not cleared on death. It's just insurance/preventative medicine.

Because that would be cheating?  This game is no fun, if you take out the !!FUN!! afterall!

Using DFHack to clean up the vomitorium, or to fix ownership on XXSOCKSXX is more utilitarian. Fixing the loyalty cascade is cheating!

Don't you still have control over the dwarf? You can build him a secluded dwelling somewhere and then use burrow alert to move civilians out of his way while giving him station order.
And you can simply order him to drop weapons on the military screen.

Maybe in a very early fort, with him in a squad of 1.  Loyalty cascaded dwarves will readily attack each other on sight, seeing each other as enemies of the civ. Managing that situation in a more mature fortress is just asking for trouble.

Early on, I could see stationing him in a guard house outside the main fortress with a food stockpile and a special bedroom though. Just be sure to keep him on active patrol most of the time, and OUTSIDE the fortress where he wont cause cancellation spam.

No dfhack.

I actually want to make the game HARDER thus playing withou drawbridges or traps. (meaning that dwarf was quite important :))

This I did with great success. Tragic way for a hero to die...

Twenty or thirty stormtroopers militia with crossbows will do at least halfway decently, especially if you give them shields.

When my first siege hit me I had 9 of those. Behind fortifications. And before them stood one brave competent Hammerdwarf with little to no armor (the only one of his 6-dwarf squad to bother showing up).

With the barrage of wooden bolts from the 3 or 4 marksdwarfs who actuallay brought bolts flying over his head the Brave hammerdwarf took the fight against 20 or so macegobbos. He quickly got his arm broken in two places as well as a broken leg and a broken spine. Nevertheless he kept swinging his hammer until the gobbos fled before him.
And then he suffocated.
He had no kills or even hits with his hammer but as he swung and missed and taking a massive beating some of the goblins actually got killed by wooden bolts.

My fortress is a tomb of dead heroes
