Was watching an LP just now and something struck me. Probably old news, but whatever.

In the beginning of the game, Toriel tells you that she goes through the ruins every day to see if anyone has fallen down, and comments that you are the first human to come for a long time. Now, one might be forgiven for assuming that she walks around looking for humans every day, and perhaps she does. On the other hand, there have only been six other humans since Chara showed up, and while we don't know how much time passes between each human entering the Underground it is likely several years. After all, almost no one you meet outside the ruins seems to be aware of who Toriel is, which implies that she's been there for so long that either everyone has forgotten she exists, or that whole monster generations (however long those are) have passed and few now living would know that Asgore was once married.

So anyway. Does Toriel really check the entrance to the Underground every single day on the off-chance that a human will show up? It's possible, but I have a more depressing theory. As you proceed on the pacifist route, you learn that when monsters are near-death (presumably from natural causes), they "fall down". Alphys used several fallen-down monsters in her determination experiments. It's likely that plenty more monsters fall down over time as well.

I submit to the jury that when Toriel takes her daily walks to look for people that have fallen down, she is not checking for humans. Rather, she searches for monsters that are going to die. For what purpose, I'm not sure, but given that she seems to be able to enter and leave the ruins at will (something most other monsters apparently can't do, if the Snowdin store owner is to be believed) my guess is that she brings the ashes of deceased monsters to friends or family or even random locations outside the ruins, should they wish it. She serves as a sort of benign Angel of Death, unable to save anyone (and frustrated by that) by able to provide comfort to the soon-to-be-deceased.

Well, if Asgore and Toriel are both still alive (and assuming that they're not immortal for any reason), then Toriel herself shouldn't have passed out of living memory. The monsters aren't big into politics, but they definitely know who the King is and who's a member of the Royal Guard, so it's probable that they knew the Queen as well before she went away.

Boss monsters only age when their children do, but Asriel didn't really die. He became Flowey and you revive him on the Neutral Route, so he's totally still alive.

Unless there's some weird time travel shit with SAVE. If Flowey can constantly reset the game, is that just in the Underground or is that through the entire world? Because if Flowey has been constantly resetting the game, trying out various timelines as he says in the Genocide Route, then the Underground has been reliving the same short amount of time over and over again. Meanwhile, children from the outside keep falling in, so presumably time still passes normally outside or else the children would be reset along with the Underground.

You know who really ruins the life of everyone in the underground? Not Flowey, not Asriel, but the player. Not the mainkid, they are but an instrument, the player.
It's like groundhog day. Except right before the loop starts all over for the player, everyone is literally begging you to let them live on. Sans tries his darndest to make you just throw away your controller and stop playing in genocide route. After you end the pacifist route, Flowey shows up on the next launch and asks you to let everyone be and NOT plunge them back to the underground.
At the certain point, the game tells you that the only winning move is to quit, let go, stop obsessing over it. Preserve your experience and move on.

I thought Asgore was the same kind that was there when they first came to the underground, and figured it was obvious they were both hundreds of years old.

Its implied several times that royal monsters are different from regular ones, which explains why they all look somewhat the same and all use fire magic. Its also implied monsters in general live a lot longer then humans. Gerson fought in the human x monster wars and is still around. There aren't many old veterans like him around because they were probably all killed during the wars.
The only somewhat recent events in monster history that happened a bit before the time frisk fell down into the ruins were sans and Papyrus apparently spontanously showing up and Alphys becoming the royal scientist.

I always figured that ASGORE was the king at the time of the war, since the picture of the monster and human leaders has a figure  who looks just like him, who also has all the same gear he does when he fights you.

I'm pretty sure it IS the same ASGORE, given how he doesn't look old even though he apparently fought every single child that fell down before frisk, and the fact that Asriel/flowey refer to him in specific, and not some other Asgore/king, which means toriel is as old as him at least.  Toriel also has really old records on her house and stuff referring to the times right after the monsters got locked undeground.
