accidentally killed Toriel.  I BELIEVE the game trolled me.  I thought I had to weaken her based on one of the tutorial dialogues, so I hit her for 11 damage repeatedly, and then my last hit did like 312 or something ridiculous.  I kept going (roguelikes have trained me) and killed no one else before or after.

Yeah, it always seemed like there was absolutely nothing to hint at how to actually spare Toriel...anywhere...? I only knew how because I'd spoiled it for myself in the demo... :/ And then of course absolutely no one else has that same mechanic, so...

In the room with 3 Froggits in the Ruins, the Froggit on the far right flat out tells you 'sometimes you may have to Spare an enemy even if their name is not yellow' about two steps before Toriel calls you. That was enough of a hint for me.

And yeah, I'm not surprised anyone would pick it, but I'm not sure if it's my #1 of 2015. I've played some good games this year... It's certainly up there, though.

Also, I figured it out because I fled the first time, and then it told me when I came back "Is there a way you can show mercy without fighting or running away?"

Its mine, because in the end I'd prefer 4 hours of mind blowing entertainment to 50 hours of good entertainment.  (Although it took me much more than 4 hours for Undertale; that was my logic for liking the original Portal).

OK, this confused me enough that I had to look it up. We're both right. The way I ended up using, because I remembered it from the demo, was deliberately missing attacks, which counts as sparing her...aaand since I was a) apparently a dork while playing the demo, and b) remembered that option from the demo, I...never tried just sparing her... :| Embarrassing.

Ah, so the problem of deducing too hard and/or assuming what you did is the only way to do it.

This isn't unique to you at all, this is where like 95% of the myths in the undertale community come from. It's a gigantic problem. This game takes into account of a lot of situations in very smart ways, so it might seem like it's reacting to something very specific when it's actually more general.

After hearing Flowey's speech after the True Pacifist ending about not resetting because everyone is happy, I don't think I'm ever going to play this game again.  Watch LPs sure, but I'm not going to play it.

It is amazing. Even playing The True Ending for the second time, it still manages to induce feels. That's two more times than mast game endings, to be sure.

I mashed Spare, steadfastly refusing to harm Goat Mom. The thing is, earlier in the RUINS, you could get different dialogue and such by repeating an action over and over again. I think the example was going down into the tunnel without talking to Toriel first. You could do that like six times before it became pointless. So I just applied that logic to the boss fight and stayed determined even when it seemed to be doing nothing. UNDYNE's Pacifist win condition was what did me in.. I tried the same strategy. I ended up getting really damn good at dodging spears after a couple hours of sparing in vain. I had to look that one up.

Are you me? I basically had the exact same problem.
It goes to show how much trickiness the game likes to throw at you.
Still, looking back, I think that the game gave enough hints as to what you were supposed to do, it's just that some of them were stuff you really had to pay attention to. For Toriel, it was the froggit in the ruins. For Undyne, I think her hint was supposed to be that it's very specifically noted that you can't flee when you're green... but you're not always green. Also the fact that she's the only boss you can actually flee from at all.
