Labor for filling a pond?

Hi!

I've created a moat around my fortress and my dwarves are well on their way to fill it up with water. Since the whole thing takes some time, I am slowly running low on drinks and was trying to get my brewer to make another barrel of ale. The problem is that I can't bring him to put down his bucket and stop filling up the moat. I deactivated all hauling labors and even cleaning and feed patients. But he's still going...

Any idea how I can deactivate water hauling for individual dwarves? I know that I can delete the zone but that would stop everyone and I do want the rest to continue hauling.

I can't help with that, I'm afraid, but have you tried making him a brewing burrow?

You could give him a bedroom and dining room in there, too, so he never has to leave.

Awesome, didn't even think about burrows. My dwarves are in your debt having saved them from drinking water. Nasty liquid!

If anyone does know another way to disable water hauling, I'd still be interested though.  ;)

as far as I know pond-filling jobs are like lever pulling jobs.  There is no labor associated with them.

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.

haha takes a while, that's for sure. I know I could just channel the water to my moat but how do I close the channel afterwards? my OCD would kill me...
As long as there is no terraforming in DF, e.g. creating a tile of earth out of mud or clay, I don't have the option of "correcting" areas I channeled out before.

It's rather easy if it freezes. Freezing multiplies water.

Forgot about freezing... that being said... I still prefer to reroute a stream or something... I can always turn it off with a levered door or bridge

If you are really OCD about not wanting to leave a permanent change to the landscape just to move the water, then you could build a pump or two and use constructed walls as a temporary 'pipe' to guide the water. When finished just deconstruct everything and pretend it never  happened. ;)

You could have made a moat of smaller holes first. It's much easier to fill 2 tiles at a time, than it is an entire moat covering your whole wall.

If they spread out the buckets enough its even possible the water evaporates faster than the dwarves can fill it |:(

Make sure he has a booze pile in there aswell or hell die of thirst before leaving the burrow.

Oh, and it is possible to place multiple pond-areas on top of each other -> more pond filling jobs + more buckets + small intermediate water reservoirs -> faster pond filling.

There is a way... cast obsidian above the channel and drop it.  Dropped natural stone changes into the material of the layer it's dropped into.  (Dropped constructions just fall apart.)

Admittedly, casting obsidian in the sky is... kind of hard.

Not really. All you need to do is construct walls to cast the mold in, build an iron mine cart, dig down to the magma level, build a pump out of fire-proof materials and use it to fill a channel with a track through it with magma. Then you run the minecart through the channel to fill it, have it dragged up on top of the casting walls and dumped into the mold. This may need to be done more than once. Then a dwarf (or dwarves) can put water on top of that, after which the cast can be deconstructed, allowing the obsidian chunk to fall into the hole and reconstitute itself as the proper material.
