Trade with humans... without humans?
« on: June 10, 2008, 09:23:00 am »

My latest fortress was one of my greatest sucesses so far : more than 70 dwarves, a dungeon master, lots of legendaries and a well-organized glass and cloth industries. My wealth is now above 1M, a waterfall project under construction, I found cave spider silk (far away, but well), iron (with no flux, though), and, well, I just love this fortress. In my view, his only problem is that I am unable to trade with humans, whereas i have a lot of stuff from sieges and crafting I would like to sell - dwarf caravans are just too small, although I give them around 5000 profit every time - and that takes away some variety of the game.

I don't mind modifying the raw or anything, but is there a way to "incent" humans to come to my fortress for trade? Or must I really start a new fortess with one of those "perfect seeds" to have the fun?

If you press 'c' I think it is, it displays all the local civilisations. It might well just be that you don't have humans in range of you, which means as far as that particular fortress goes, you won't ever get human caravans I'm afraid.

Yes, I saw that : I have access to all civilizations (including Goblin and kobold) except humans. Is there no way, even with what could appear as "cheating" to some, to have a human civ appear, say, miraculously close?

No, it's defined on embark. However you can increase wagons capacity by modifying theim in creature_equipment.txt .

On the embark screen you can check which civs you have access too.  Only dwarves can cross mountains, so if you pick a spot in a little valley don't expect humans... or sieges.  Smaller maps have more problems with this.  Because a mountain range sometimes spans the whole length/width of the map it'll cut off the elves or goblins or whoever is living on that small nook.

For future reference, the 'c' civilizations screen only shows civs that your fortress has encountered; thus, at the start of the game it's empty; it adds kobolds when you find your first thief, goblins with your first ambush/babysnatcher, dwarves when they arrive in the fall, etc.
