couple of snips from wikipedia

"The free element, produced by reductive smelting, is a hard, lustrous, silver-gray metal."

"Cobalt silicate and cobalt(II) aluminate (CoAl2O4, cobalt blue) give a distinctive deep blue color to glass, smalt, ceramics, inks, paints and varnishes."

So, while it isn't blue itself it seems to turn things blue. At least that's what I gather.

I believe this page is more on topic.

Children you rescue shouldn't behave like rabid beasts.  I guess your regular companions shouldn't act like rabid beasts either.
I think that's a little more impossible than I'm likely to have time for.

I thought kaolinite was red. You might be thinking of kimberlite.

I'm pretty sure kaolinite-colored balls are a result of the danger room.

I recall Cobalt in particular from my high school chemistry class. The teacher would, as the "final exam", give you a test tube with a number of compounds from a list, and you would have to tell him what was in it. One of the easier ones to get was the cobalt based compound, as it was actually a pinkish red, but turned blue when you added... well, most things.

Cobalt compounds also generally burn with a deep blue flame, if I remember correctly.
