Basically this, but I'd like to add LotRO. Possibly my favourite MMO I've played, though I really played it before it went freemium. You can unlock a good portion of features but you need to be sure to only spend whatever currency you have on the map+quest unlocks for more content, nothing else matters.

Would you believe me if I said "Warhammer Online" was still going?  :P

I can't really vouch for it now, but it was fun when it came out. Sadly how much fun it is is tied closely to how many people are playing. I can't imagine there's that many playing it now.

I feel like I have been there for so many fun game launches but they dropped off. SWG, Darkfall, Mortal, Conan, a handful more. Crazy. Well, a few too many EVE videos has be resubbing. I just applied to ARMOK, gotta go find a dwarven sacrifice.

Well i used to play Navyfield quite extensively for some time but the game got pretty stale for me... hell i might even trade my account for something since i'm not really even planning to go back.

Basically it's World of tanks ship edition... with outdated 2D graphics that fake being isometric.
Oh and there are carriers with bombers and stuff...

i am pretty sure "Navyfield 2" is in some sort of open beta right now... maybe even released already, just played it a bit in CB.
had a bunch of nice new changes... like 3 battle ready ships you could use in a fight untill all 3 are destroyed. and gameplay is either "kill all enemy ships" or "reduce enemy supply tickets to 0", with holding more island bases than the enemy team does. and transport ships are the quickest in capturing bases. think leveling up stuff was "better" too.... still takes a ton of time though to get the 120 (?) levels up.

Navy Field 2 has serious competition from WarGaming's World of Warships (closed beta this year or next year) and Gaijin Entertainment's War Thunder naval battles (in development).

I am so impressed by War Thunder engine, the damage modelling is beautiful and it's not as resource intensive as World of Tanks engine. I even love looking at my plane getting shot, losing a wing, getting caught on fire, etc.

So, from what I've heard about Star Wars Galaxies, it sounds pretty cool. Is playing the emulator worth it on its own, or can it really only stand on nostalgia factor?

My vote goes to Mabinogi and Cosmic Break for MMOs.

Mabinogi has a lot of stuff to do, an open world, a ton of quests, crafting, and pvp, all of which are enjoyable. The main problem is that the community kind of sucks and most of the players I've met in that game are kind of annoying, childish and impatient. At least though if you take the time you can compose music and play it ingame as well as record video without any external applications. It's not pay-to-win but if you want pets, mounts, multiple characters or perhaps a maid or a butler you'll have to pay for such luxuries.

Cosmic Break on the other hand is a fun little pvp game with mecha, androids, gynoids and cyborgs fighting each other in 15vs15 arena battles. It's also got mission and quest modes and while being pay-to-win you can trade in the credits you make in matches for Rt, which is needed to purchase premium content. You can maybe get 50rt a month doing this, which is enough to get some of the better bots or some nice premium weapons. You can change the skins on most of the robots and cyborgs too, which results in some pretty fun stuff regardless of your preferences.

Okay I got in here a little late so if there's anything here that's already been mentioned assume I'm just backing it up.

Mabinogi as Malkavian said is pretty great, I agree with his analysis. If you're looking for something different then I can't reccomend it enough.

As far as PvP goes RO is an older MMO (that is grindy as hell, admittantly), with full guild PvP and territory holding. But again, beware of the grind. It's been alive since the early 2000's despite being a massive grind for good reason.

I'm pretty sure I saw someone reccomend age of wushu, It's a goodun for the PvP types. Most anything meaningful in the game is based around PvP, and you should be ready to be assaulted physically for no good reason. Combat system initially seems mash the keys-ey but it's actually got quite a bit of depth. Read up the column, "Art of Wushu" on massively for a bit more info on the game.

Haven and Hearth, while focused more on building then PvP, is still an open PvP world, with a.... unique combat system. It's very complex, and not without it's flaws, but it works. Downside is due to it being more of a world building game complete with player thieves and brigands, it's got to maintain fear of outlaws somehow, and ergo it is possible to grind your troubles away. With the world resets that occur fairly frequently however, I doubt it'd be that big a deal. Also includes permadeath! You get back a portion of your stats and skills if you reincarnate depending on a particular belief slider, a lot of people on the forums are very weepy about the fact that this means the game isn't permadeath anymore, but it honestly has very little effect as most people will be on the low end of the "getting stuff back" spectrum, as it speeds up character growth significantly. Playing as a hermit is possible but most people would reccomend playing in a group.

I'm sure there are more but those are the ones I remember.

the ones i played the "longest"/"enjoyed the most" in the "mmo-ish genre" the last 2-3 years are probably:
-tera (prettyyyyyy + good action-y combat instead of hotkeys... but the usual "generic mmo questing/leveling")
HOLY CRAP SOMEONE ELSE PLAYED TERA.

Loved the game for a while, moved on to other things.  It's free to play now, so you can give it a whirl.

Only game I can think of where some of the male armors are showing heavy amounts of skin.

Fun to play, if you want to physically dodge/block/attack and not just stand there and wait on cooldowns.

I had the same reaction with Cosmic Break. It's almost the exact opposite- mecha and mecha women.

I met someone two days ago in fact who said this was the first time they had even experienced SWG. Generally there are about 1500 people on the Basilisk server, and you can find player towns and many people in most. I feel like you can get most of the Star Wars experience, although it may seem a little ghost town-ish at times.

What expansions are included in it? Is it just the basic game? I liked the mechanics of the JTL expansion (basically, you license for a class of ship, select a type of ship, then customize it with various parts that are equivalent to gear), but I didn't see in the FAQ or easily find elsewhere whether they've emulated it yet.

Edit: Ah, I found it in the Project Status list that it is still "in planning or development." Considering skills - a pretty major and defining part of SWG - have only been partially implemented I'd wager there's still a long way to go before they get around to JTL.

Yeah, no JTL. Really was honestly one of the best expansions for an MMO ever. I loved it to the core, I wish that the closing of SWG would just result in a complete leak of the old code..

if you're a rush loving hardcore pvp gamer like me then you would love darkfall for every inch of it!
going on massive battles and raiding towns and the sheer thrill of the hunt when you chase and ambush a person
who's just passing by with his brand new crafted gear only to be counter ambushed while you chase him and you
fleeing and hiding using the land to your advantage or having your friends wait at a certain location.
also sea battle with huge ships is a thing and player city building and the entire games economy is player driven.
LOSING IS FUN

BUT
the game is developed by a horrible company who never meet their deadlines if at all.
the game is NOT for solo playing, you simply wount last and be bored as hell.
you might rage quit a few time because you spent your whole day gathering resource for a new set of armor only to lose it all to a random raider on the way back to the bank.
the fee is simply high as fuck (why i'm not playing atm)
