Enjoy, still a lot of features to add but the basic game is there and running with up to 1,500 people on at peak times.

Has anyone tried Rift? It has recently dropped its subscriptions and gone F2P.

I've been playing Rift a bit since it went f2p.  It's very much a traditional mmo in just about every aspect, although it's very polished with a lot of content, and the soul tree system makes for a somewhat more interesting character/class system.

I gather if you've never spent anything on it (I had a couple months sub back at launch so started with a bit of "loyalty" and associated perks) there's a couple annoying inconveniences like bag space and not being able to sell on auction, but other than that you can play through for free without any real issues (and they have their version of plex so you can buy microtransaction currency from other players using in-game currency).

Definitely worth checking out, unless you really hate (dare I say it) wow-style mmo's.

There are three main MMO's I suggest to everyone that have always been brilliant games IMO.

Wurm Online - WURMS IN SPACEno not really. Medieval sandbox survival with slightly crappy graphics and few animations, but an incredibly fun game... if you've got about six hours a day to spare. Development has recently picked up and it looks like rolf is starting to get his stuff together. Commonly called Progress Bar: The Game.

Eve Online - Everyone's heard of eve, but if you're planning to move out from under your lovely rock, or maybe even boulder, here's a quick summary. Spaceship based game with an incredibly strong player-driven economy, battles consisting of (literally) thousands of players, and a general lack of rules. Want to spend six months scamming a rich business? Go for it! Want to harass the man that toppled your once powerful empire through bribed attacks? Screw him, do it!

The only downsides are excessive and repetitive combat and resource gathering, plus goonsquad; a supermassive group of randoms from all walks of life controlling everything through sheer force of numbers. Eve is where goon became the clusterfuck we know and love today.

Planetside 2 - A free to play FPS focusing around three factions fighting for dominance of a planet, consisting of three continents (essentially servers within a server). Lots of fun to play and plenty of items to buy with the ingame currency (certs). The platoon operations make the game feel like a real battle, but solo play gets boring, fast. It's a little pay-to-win, but it's entirely possible to buy all the upgrades without being an elite wallet warrior of the highest echelon.

Well i used to play Navyfield quite extensively for some time but the game got pretty stale for me... hell i might even trade my account for something since i'm not really even planning to go back.

Basically it's World of tanks ship edition... with outdated 2D graphics that fake being isometric.
Oh and there are carriers with bombers and stuff...

I have played many MMOs in the last 5 years or so, both open-world RPGs an lobby-based types, in all kinds of setting (sci-fi, historical, fantasy).

These ones come to mind whenever someone asks for a recommendation:

EVE Online -- By far the best of them all because of its sandboxy nature and how each action has meaningful, realistic consequences. There's a reason why even after 10 years, EVE playerbase still grows to 500,000 subscribers (Feb 2013 figure).

Things you can do in EVE

$4000 Titans in EVE

World of Tanks -- If you like tanks, chances are you will like this. Imagine 15 vs 15 Counter Strike match, but each team member is a WW2 tank/tank destroyer/self propelled gun, which has to factor in terrains, shell penetration, armour facing, speed, etc. You see, this game is much more tactical because each tank has its own characteristics, making teamwork essential.  I'd suggest you check out our World of Tanks thread; plenty of Bay12ers playing it. I'll let this gameplay video speak for itself:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FXKS6bfXyys

War Thunder -- Similar to World of Tanks but it features WW2 planes instead. This one has a lot of potentials and will feature combined arms battles (planes, tanks, ships). I've been making a transition from World of Tanks to War Thunder.

Worth mentioning (just haven't had the time to play it enough):

Planetside 2 -- Battlefield 3 on steroid. Imagine 1000 vs 1000 match in a single server, with infantry, land- and air-based vehicles. Has its own active Bay12 thread, so yeah it's popular here.

$4000 Titans in EVE

And it was rather amusing to see someone in a titan, you know, basically making money. Using it as a money-making device. It really was not practical. And indeed when people saw that they felt it was their duty to actually wipe it out.

Thanks everyone for the input. I've been reading up on the new EVE expansion, it seems like they added a lot of new features. I might take a look at the B12 corp if it's open for invites!

Also, I think I'll look into TSW. It seems to be receiving high praise from everyone. I reinstalled SWG a few days ago and have been nastalgiaing all over the place.

I've been playing Cosmic Break recently.

In case the title didn't explain it, it's about giant mecha and giant women in mecha suits battling each other for questionable reasons and raging over how fucking powerful Melee is.

If you play with a good team and drop 20$ early on (as the premier money is actually a lot easier to get now-a-days) you can become competent really quickly, the only real problems with the game are low server population. Recently I've seen no more than 200 at a time, and the beginner server is all but dead at all times.

Arena Mode is by far the best use of your time, and while it's small, I do like the game and enjoy it as a time-waster.

I've played Cosmic Break when it was still 1st open beta. It was awesome. Now it's Gatcha hell and pay-to-win. Any changes from that?

EVE

Here's a 21 day trial for Eve, one week longer than the default trial you get if you go to the website.

Not really, but it's levelled out some. Win gatcha once, and you'll have enough fuel to keep going.

Or you can do what I do, and use the very few gatcha attempts (I think I've only ever done four or five) and build the impossible. Considering you can get an x5 roll on the pricy stuff every month-and-a-half or so, gara items are a lot easier to get now.
