The MMO hunt - What's fun?
« on: June 22, 2013, 11:57:47 am »

I have an itch to get back into an MMO but I'm quite torn as to what is out there right now. Many do not have a trial available (Darkfall Unholy Wars, The Secret World) so it's hard to want to drop $30 on a game just to try it.

I figured B12ers may have some solid info on what's fun right now. Specifically, has anyone tried the new Darkfall? I miss the full pvp experience. I was also thinking about returning to EVE since the release of Odyssey.

What are you all playing, MMO wise? What's good/bad about it?

Spiral Knights, Fallen Earth, and Crimecraft: Gang Wars are all free and pretty good on Steam. Former two are also very good about their microtransactiony things, in that you can explore every asset of the game without ever making one, hell, you can get the bought currency just by paying found currency in the first and you acquire reward points in the latter, which allows you to get prettymuch get anything important on the market.

Last Stand: Dead Zone is a great game on Armorgames, Facebook, and Kongregate. Almost everything that can be actually bought with money can also be got with the fuel that you can find rarely or even make in your own compound. It is made by Con Artist Games, a group of four people who have constantly put out multiple great games, such as Sin Mark, Crush the Castle, the other three games of the Last Stand series, and the Warfare 1917/1944 games. Very fun game.

I've heard a few people praising the how The Secret World does quests and character progression, though I haven't played it or even looked at videos for it.

Oh, you already mentioned TSW. Go go gadget reading.

TSW has a trial. I can send you a trial code if you're interested.

Star Trek Online is pretty fun as far as freemium games go. You can technically get anything in the game without spending a cent of real life money, though it obviously takes a long time. Restrictions on free players are pretty light, mostly just reduced inventory space and you still have quite a bit of room on you plus storage. I'd recommend it for the character creator and space combat alone.

Spiral Knights, Vindictus, Warframe, and Planetside 2 are the MMOs that I've played in the past few months. Basically anything that doesn't have boring auto-attack/hotkey combat.

I'll put in my 2 bits for The Secret World. Unlike a lot of MMO games, the quests are enough like stories that I found it very easy to lose myself in the game playing solo. The combat isn't great but if you can get over the fact its hotkey based, there's things to like about it.

the ones i played the "longest"/"enjoyed the most" in the "mmo-ish genre" the last 2-3 years are probably:

-star trek online (they created a realy good universe/setting with this one... all space stuff is pretty good... personally i didnt like the ground combat that much though. even enjoyed casually crafting items in here without a ridiculous grind for materials most other games have.)

-tera (prettyyyyyy + good action-y combat instead of hotkeys... but the usual "generic mmo questing/leveling")

-vindictus (too more action based combat instead of hotkey based. but battle maps need to be repeated a ton... so it gets a bit boreing after a while.)

-neverwinter (i am a fan of D&D and played "Dungeons and Dragons Online" a lot years ago... neverwinter seems more "action-y" and less "follows the D&D ruleset")

-age of wushu (usa?)/age of wulin (think wulin is the eu version that went into beta now/soon) (i liked the chinese setting/atmosphere of this one a lot. also a lot player vs player (school vs school) interacions and not that many player vs npc fights/quests/etc)

-apb (all points bulletin) (criminals vs cops third person shooter + the most clothing/car customization freedom you will find in a game right now (sadly it runs out of memory all the time on my win xp now))

-world of tanks (quick random tank battles)

-dc universe online (make your own superhero, another game where the lore/setting/universe is not bad)

all pretty much good playable without paying anything...  vindictus is probably the only one where you "need" to buy inventory space (if you stick with playing it for longer), because there is no way to store all the stuff they throw at you normally.
all others are pretty good playable for a ton of time without the "need" to buy anything in their cashshops.

Supposedly the relaunch of APB is actually pretty darn good, too. Never played it myself, though.

Haven't played in ages, but APB was a lot of fun.  Main issues I remember were the matchmaking system creating some pretty uneven matches, and a lot of accusations of cheating (I could never decide how much of that was warranted vs just high skill players pwning newbies).  The microtransactions were silly-expensive for what you got in many cases, but you could still have a lot of fun without spending any cash.  Keep meaning to go back and see if there's enough people still playing to be fun, just too many games and not enough time.

If you've been playing MMO's for a long time, and are getting increasingly bored of them then really the only thing that will keep you interested are sandbox MMO's. So I suggest Eve online if you have the patience, or perhaps the Star Wars Galaxy Emulator which has a pretty decently sized community and a good amount of features in it.
