How do I heat up ice?
« on: June 22, 2013, 04:23:24 am »

Exactly what the heading says. How do I heat up ice so I can get a supply of water? And I mean without magma... I just started in a SUPER-COLD climate (mistake...) and I want a source of water (just in case...).

Well I think digging down for cavern water would be easier, but if I remember correctly is was possible to cave-in ice to water. Wiki may have something about it in glacier article or something.

Without looking, I'm going to say that the wiki said running magma under the ice will melt it.  Of course, I was wrong that one time, when I thought I was wrong.

Here is what you do.

There should be several layers of ice before the you reach stone; because of how the game and freezing works, you'll have to channel down and use ramps to pass the ice-rock boundary rather than staircases.  Dig down into the rock layer and dig a pit at least one layer below the surface of the rock.  Dig around the ice above so that you can cave it into the pit.  After a few ticks, it should turn to 7/7 water.

Also, you shouldn't remove ceiling over this pit lest the pit will be marked as outside and will get temperature according.

Though these days you can just et to the caverns with their lakes.
