This was done with the previous branch of Cata, that is now discontinued because Whales went to work on something else. The code was changed a lot (and generally cleaned up), perhaps without much regard for tile support. I do think there's quite some people working on re-implenting tileset support for DDA, tough. And hopefully in a way that'll make it easy to maintain.

You're not really convincing me they need other people's money to get it done, if it's been done before and there are currently people working on it as well.

They need money for somebody to work on it more and speed up development. Sure, they could keep developing if this fails, but it'll be slow.

The $2 tier reward is fabulous.  I hope this kickstarter is successful.  Good job on putting it together.

Pretty much this right here. We don't need any money, but the majority of these features probably won't be seen within at least a year, maybe more, if a full-time coder isn't hired. That's why the goal of the kickstarter is to speed development, not necessarily to make development that wouldn't normally happen occur.

What if the backers aren't satisfied with your progress? What if people start getting pissed off if your work is slow, or not up to their expectations? It's not like you can refund them, considering they're not purchasing a product that can be easily refunded.

In that respect you're running the same risk as when backing any kickstarter project.

Then they aren't satisfied. It's a known risk of supporting any game's kickstarter, that things might not go quite as promised. At least in this particular case we already have a working game, which is more then many games are able to claim at their kickstarters. Also in this case we can make sure that the particular coder who is promising the features won't get paid unless he's actually working on said features, which is also more then many games' kickstarters can promise.

What if you buy any game and you aren't satisfied? What happens if a game you preordered is delayed?

It has been stated several times that the Kickstarter is for helping to significantly speed up development, it's not required for development to continue.

I do not understand why anyone would have a problem with this.

I'm perfectly fine with people not supporting it though - even better if they are actively contributing to the code. The Kickstarters goal is to get us more developer time in bigger, beefier chunks, but if you decide that you'd rather just contribute a big ol'beefy chunk of developer time directly (or convince someone else to play the game, who doesn't now, and who ends up doing the same), that's great.

Cataclysm is a pretty resilient thing at this point, I think - if you'd rather support the game in other ways because you don't think the Kickstarter is the best way to help out, you're okay with me. I do think it's worth having - I think getting these features and bugfixes in several months or a year in advance would be a great thing. I think allowing someone who's dedicated enough to work on the game full time to be able to do so is pretty valuable in and of itself (its not like anyone is going to be getting rich off of this). And the game is certainly not being held for ransom - if you don't want to contribute, that's ok. You don't have to. The game is going to keep going - not much could stop it at this point. This is just an opportunity for those who want to help but aren't technically able to be able to put forward a couple dollars and essentially say "Here, put in the time I'd like to dedicate writing code and improving the game in my place."

It's not really much more than that - but, at the same time, it's not any less than that either, and I don't think that's a small thing. This isn't a "make or break" moment for Cataclysm - it's just a really nice opportunity.

It's not a guarantee. I'll be completely honest - it's not. We're going to do our best, and I, personally, will do my best to ensure it is as close to a guarantee as humanly possible, but the only way you can be sure you'll be 100% happy with your contribution is if you make that contribution yourself, and Cataclysm is, thankfully, the kind of game where you can do that.

From my understanding the z-levels implementation already provided was poor and not at all what they were going for.
