Quick question, why make a kickstarter for this? Wouldn't a donation drive (Similar to what Toady does) be much more affective, and less offending than starting a kickstarter?

If we had reason to believe we could support someone off the proceeds, it might work, but it seems like it would be strictly less effective. There's also ambiguity to who the money goes to (which is quite clear in the kickstarter), and the benefit from having programmers who don't have to worry about job security and whether they'll be able to pull in enough money to pay rent next month or whether they should start looking for a job now. There's a lot of opportunity cost involved there, and since they aren't the "sole guy working on the game" like toady is, I feel like a lot of people might find it MORE offensive. If they start working on the game full time too, shouldn't they get a share of the money? While here, we can easily say "This is what the money was raised for, and we can't spend it on anything else."

Wow. I look away for a weekend to work on the assignments I had due yesterday and later today and this thread is born, catches fire, gets put out, catches fire again, gets put out again... kinda undecided whether I found it entertaining or horrifying.

Either way, great to see this thread here, a very good idea to create a new place to host the Kickstarter focused conversation GlyphGryph. Also, whoa, the Kickstarter's rocketing up since last I saw it! :)

How dare this thread be not first page, blasphemy !

The kickstarter seems to be kicking quite well, considering it's been less than a week. Hoping this funding will eventually give us a proper NPC implementation, something, imo, the game needs even more than z-levels even.

It's mainly due to the constant lock/unlock combination needed to moderate out our resident troll. :P

But yeah, it will be very nice if we can get NPC's to not crash at various points of the game, the largest handicap for which that I can see would be the fact that many of the respective functions in-game aren't designed to function on a human that isn't the main player. Therefore if you call them on an NPC they either don't do anything or they give messages like "Your gun misfires!" when really it's the NPC's gun that misfired. With any luck we'll make it though, and then we can watch them get fixed! :D

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

Figured I should post in here now. Firstly as a PTW, secondly so I can possibly answer any questions that the other devs watching this thread miss :D

The Kickstarter is now almost 2/3rds funded! WOO! ^_^ I'm excited to see how the primary goals and stretch goals play out.

Digging's a lot like surgery, see -- you grab the sharp thing and then drive the sharp end of the sharp thing in as hard as you can and then stuff goes flying and then stuff falls out and then there's a big hole and you're done. I kinda wish there was more screaming, but rocks don't hurt so I guess it can't be helped.

*sigh*
So, how many days do you guys think it'll be before the kick starter is complete? I'm betting a week or two.

(Seriously, Miauw. We ignore him, we keep the thread running, it isn't that hard. I don't want my threads to be constantly locked with him having the last post.)

And yes, 2/3rds funded!

For anyone who's interested, there's been some issues we'll be announcing in the Kickstarter soon. GalenEvil is the backup contracter we had ready in case said issues arose, and he's currently preparing to take over those responsibilities in response to said issues.

Question: If/When the Kickstarter surpasses its goal, will all additional funds go to paying the programmer for more time?

I'm sure you guys can do it, and hell, you probably deserve the money anyway for working on this.

Also, Glyph, 100th reply there.

(Damnit, not anymore :c)

Most of them will. We're also hoping to have physical reward tiers though (posters and whatnot), so some money will go towards adding those and improving the existing tiers.

Actually, after the two Driverman posts are gone, this quoted reply will be #100. Unless "there" was meant to be "here", in which case you're entirely correct.

Ah yes, forgot you had those. The killers of all Kickstarter profit margins.

Kinda curious where this goes, in all honesty. I'll throw you guys a few bucks the next time I've got some spare funds. I wish you all luck.

Updating pledge and throwing a few more dollars at it.  Also throwing a donation to Toady for having to keep coming back to ban this fool.  Sorry for response to him, but just thought he should know hes increasing the donations to the project every time he opens his mouth.  In the meanwhile, maybe www.indiegames.com can cover it for some more visibility?  Hell, I'll just send em an email myself with a small writeup.
