I definitely support this. I mean if a guy loves programming away a game that everyone is obsessed over, who am i to argue about paying a guy to make it his full time job? Kickstarting open source programming is in my opinion probably the greatest idea that goes off the founders vision for kickstarter; that the community support projects that they want to see in life. I can't code for shits but if hes willing to take his time to do it then by all means i put my money forward, i don't have to receive anything as long as i see the goals i supported come to life.

CODE HARD

I'm contributing!

By which, of course, I mean that I contributed the pay for what will probably amount to a half hour of work. But hey. Whatever.

I'm bumping this thread because conversation on the kickstarter stuff keeps appearing in the "game" thread instead, and I'd prefer it mostly be discussed over here.

Hurray for kickstarter! Will contribute as soon as I'm able.

I don't quite understand the negative comments here. This is asking for fans to donate money to improve and accelerate development of Cataclysm, in part addressing special requests that would significantly derail main development. The team has gone above and beyond to explain that this would not make this a paid product. Rather, this is a call for donation to significantly upgrade the game - quickly.

I'm also greatly entertained by the use of Draw Your Cataclysm thread :D

Dang, every post seems to getting destroyed.  Oh well; back to the topic on hand.  I might throw some money towards this Kickstarter, might not.  Not because I don't think this is a legitimate use of Kickstarter, but because I simply haven't played enough Cataclysm to justify throwing money at it.

OK, I have to reload the save.
There was a bit of a problem regarding flashfreezing, a ballistae, and a barrel of dwarven ale. Gonna fix it up.

Holy fucking Jesus riding a fire-breathing Cthulhu. It's been like, what, two days? And the funding is halfway already.

I know that's not how donation works and it'll probably stall a bit as people run out of money to donate, but holy shit.
I don't think this'll turn Cataclysm into pure awesome, since the real game industries have full-time employees that get paid ridiculously steep wages, but I have a feeling that the resulting clean-up will likely move the game out of obscurity.

Cataclysm isn't that obscure.  It's not one of the bigger roguelikes yet but it's found an audience which puts it way ahead of most of what gets released.

Backed and tracked. I hope I can personally contribute something once I figure out this vodoo you call 'programming'.

Perhaps GlyphGryph could explain, he was aware of it just a few months ago: -"I have no intent of doing the kickstarter thing or the donation thing. Hiring people is a headache and seems like a recipe for resentment among those contributing for free."

This is actually worth addressing, so I hope it doesn't get deleted.

From what I remember that was in response to someone suggesting we do so to to compensate existing contributors (which this won't do). I did end up thinking about it though, and deciding it would be worth the headache if it worked. (And yes! It is turning out to be a huge headache! Hah.) I measured the response among the various active contributors once I worked out how it could work, and they seemed accepting (with one or two notable exceptions), meaning that fear was essentially unfounded.

I did, in fact, have no intent at the time. (Man, was that only three months ago?) But times changed, and I saw the potential it offered for improving the game.

I wish this game and the backers the best of luck with the kickstarter, I've been following DDA for a while and it looks really promising.  But!  It would be nice if people didn't act like abaraba/LazyCat doesn't have a point.  There is something inherently odd about paying just one guy of an open source project, and IMO anyone who contributed to the game would be entitled to be more than a bit miffed.  Furthermore, such a reaction should have been fully anticipated and tolerated.  What appears to be rather judgemental stonewalling/trolling of his opinions doesn't reflect well on the devs nor community.  Going by this thread alone, he's received far more ad-hominems than he's given.
