Heya everybody, wanted to share the newest thing I've been working on. Not everybody might follow the existing Cataclysm thread regularly, and I didn't want to get it mixed up with gameplay discussion and suggestions, plus I just wanted to let people know... I'm running a Kickstarter! Wooh. I'm somewhere between elated and terrified at the idea.

Anyway, onto the kickstarter and the game!

"Open-source roguelike survivalcraft/driving game in a sci-fi zombie apocalypse needs a full-time developer to accelerate development."

To get a really good overview of the game, see this link:

So, I'm involved in the Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead game discussed in  but I figured it might be good to give the Kickstarter it's own home for discussion.

The pitch was sexy. I love this game too much not to donate. I did just get paid...

Best of luck! I'd like to try to donate in the future, when I've got money. Either way, I'm looking forward to whatever comes out of this.

Especially the Serious Bugfixing.

I'm sorry, but if you're asking $7,000 dollars for a rogue-like game (Especially one that is open source, and is based on someone's previous work) then you're not going to fulfill your goal anytime soon.

"Worse case scenario: All of us die. I'm gonna be straight with you guys, if that happens we're probably not going to make our commitments. Apologies in advance."

That made me laugh more than it should have.

Me gusta!
Unfortunately, I'm not sure if it's actually going to reach $7000.

Best of luck. That $7000 target seems reachable, but we'll have to see.

Besides, even if you did get 7,000 dollars how would we know this won't just turn into vaporware? You said that the main developer could disappear randomly, and that's pretty sketchy especially since your donators are entrusting you with 7,000 dollars to make a game.

Anyone can disappear randomly. the likeliness of that happening is what matters, and from what i understood, its not higher than average.

Toady can also fall into a hole in the ground and get stuck there for 2 weeks. or what happens if he suddenly, god forbid, gets killed by a rampaging yak while travelling the far east?
what then? what with all the money we donated? should we not donate because he can suddenly die, or more likely, suddenly have a nervous break down and decides to stop all development on DF?

I'm with bdthemag on this. I'm wary of donating to this project because I do not see where the money is actually going, or why it is needed to produce a roguelike of this nature. The stuff that usually burns capital just isn't there. The concept of the developer outlining three months to work on it and demanding $7000 (ostensibly for living expenses) is also a bit silly. Is he going to slack off at the end of that while he looks for a new job? Why didn't he produce the Kickstarter himself? This is probably something that would make more sense on a crowdfunding website that's less investment-based.

As for Toady: The difference is that people here donate money to Toady because of a product he has already created. They continued doing so between 2008 and 2010 when no updates were released. It's not funding in return for the promise of more work. It's a "thanks buddy" for producing a game we spend a lot of time playing. Kickstarter specifically implies we get something tangible out of donating.

I actually prefer that my donated money would go directly to feeding the developer rather being burnt on stuff like office space, attorneys, marketing expenses and all the others that usually stands between a developer and his money.

And i donate to toady only so he could keep working. if he announce that he stops tomorrow, will you still donate next year? i know i wont.

Edit - Also, regarding those 7k for 3-4 months.

Take into account that about 10% are given to kickstarter and amazon for fees. another 5-10% are being lost due to payments not processing through at the end, taxes and for some projects you got the physical rewards expenses (here its pretty limited, which is good). so those 7k quickly turn into 4k and even less which for 3 months is really not that much to ask for.
