Questions about melting/dumping.
« on: June 10, 2008, 01:13:00 am »

Could anyone give me some advice on dumping items?  Lately I've been finding massive piles of XXpig tail capXX around my fortress and so I set a ZONE for dumping along a dropoff near my fort, then designated all the caps as D for dump.  Unfortunately, 10 years later none have been dumped.  Does anyone know why?

Furthermore I find melting goblin iron items to be a very time consuming task.  I'd love to be able to designate them as meltable without looking inside each barrel, THEN looking at each item individually.

Does anyone know a shortcut on melting items like that?  Thanks for any help you can give me.

Try diggin a small channel and designating it and some squares around ( dwarfs cannot dump items if they have to fall into the dump themselves ) as a garbage pit.

Dwarfs prefer to dump items to a lower level then the actual dump zone, since piling up the garbage on one spot isn't really "disposal", just moving the trash to another smelly pile.

Well the dump area I have designated includes land at their Z-level as well as land down 2 z-levels.  But it never gets used.

I guess another option would be to use a channel dug over magma to dump into right?  If I have temperature turned off would the items actually be destroyed though?

To my knowledge items that are owned by a dwarf never get dumped. If you fit your dwarves with new clothes the old ones will forever stay in your fortress and there seems to be now way to get rid of them.

Ownership outlasts even the death of the owning dwarf...

Using the 'z' stocks menu really helps with melting.  Done right, it also helps with dumping.

for instance, I just got six caged goblins in need of stripping.  All the stuff their late companions were carrying had already been toted to a stockpile specifically for their crap.  I built the cages the goblins were in, set up a small garbage dump nearby, then forbade everything in the stockpile.  Going into the stocks menu, I simply looked for all the narrow things that weren't already forbidden and set them to be dumped.  Worked like a charm.  The weapons required a little more thought, but still worked.  After all the dump jobs cleared out of the queue, I used the "reclaim" designation on both the dump and the stockpile, and got to melting.

Careful about using the stock menu for melting weapons. If you use goblin weapons in your weapon traps, they (afaik) show up on the stocks menu. I don't know if the Dwarves will rip them out to melt them.

Also, if you build containers in the Dwarves' bedrooms they will eventually haul their junk into the containers. In my communal bedroom, there is a side room where there are a ton of containers mutually owned by all the Dwarves. Along one wall is a raising bridge. When the room gets full of crap, I deconstruct the containers, build a wall where the sock vault connects to the bedroom, and atomize the contents of the sock vault with the bridge.

When the dwarves open it up again, I'm sure they're sad to see their socks have been reduced to a fine powder. But it makes me happy. Plus it doubles as an execution room for nobles and cheesemakers, containing the chunks quite nicely.

Odd, every bedroom has containers.  In 10 years they've never once used them.  Even my nobles have 100s of things in their room and not in containers.
