Bone shield
« on: June 21, 2013, 04:13:33 pm »

I have a recent artifact that's a goblin bone shield that is worth quite a lot. While I know value doesn't matter, Is this better than teh masterpiece steel shields my dwarves currently use?

Consensus, unless I am mis-remembering, is that for blocking it will be just as good as any other material (possibly with improvements due to being an artifact) and a better to hit (its an artifact) but worse damage for shield bashing because bone is much less dense than steel.

It would be as good as any other artifact shield, except for bashing. And if bone is so light as is think it is, it might be better after all since your dwarves won't be as slowed by the additional weight.

First of all, nice shield! Made from goblon bone and a image of the foundation of you fortress, very dwarfy.

Like people said, is a good shield for defense but not for bashing. Maybe is better to give to a markdwarf, cause the low weight and they don't go bashing with shield anyway.

For my two cents on this: Shields are pretty darn effective in blocking dragonfire regardless of their material. That's right: Not only is a wooden shield just as effective as a steel shield to block actual attacks; it is just as good at blocking god damn FIRE.

Because of this, I have my steel-clad squads equipped with wooden shields most of the time. I mean, it's not like you're usually swimming in steel bars to waste it on shields, anyway...

Don't fret. I'm sure the tantrum spiral will succeed and you can start all over again fail. The worst best thing is when you actually manage to pull out of a spiral with a few souls to go.

I once unleashed chaos only for it to be sadness. Everything that came out was mutliated by my 15 steel clad guards, and Wally the mayor.

Most of my once mighty military was taken by sadness. Right in the middle of the apocalypse a group of 20 migrants comes into the fortress, ignoring the flames, screams, and smoke bellowing from the entrance

The sadness I referred to was the ease with which they were dispatched.

They obviously thought you got the magma forges up and running  :D

This is not saddness, this is DF. Nothing more awesome than watching a mother beat her baby to death with its dead sister corpse.

I did that recently, with three sane dwarves after the wyrm attacked. Mighty Dumed led us out of our depression, and our sane mason fashioned the perfect centerpiece of our new barracks, which has now trained 9 legendary warriors.

I have been running this fort for ten in game years, now. And yes, I have discovered that wooden shields are better, but I have shit for wood available, so I traded a ton of crafts for shields from the hoomans (sic).
