Explosions, fire, etc..
« on: June 09, 2008, 04:28:00 pm »

I have eventual aspirations of creating a once-yearly dwarven 'fireworks display' at my current fortress by stockpiling a large amount of booze on top of an aerial platform a short distance from the fort.

I've come to the realization that I know of no (non-accidental) ways to set things on fire. The only times I've had things set on fire in the game were when dwarves fell into magma or during dragon/fire imp attacks.

Anybody know of a way to set something on fire *on purpose*?

Nope. I've even tried magma, it doesn't blow up for some reason.

Well, drat.

Hmm.. I suppose I could leave an assembly of chained kittens up on top and just release a caged fire imp up there, though..

there is no way to start fires without cheating. You can use tiletool to create some magma, but it's buggy and if you do it inside the square will be set to a bazillion degrees below zero forever. It seems to work ok outside though.

You used to be able to use weatherdwarf to set temperatures but I don't think it's been updated and I don't think it works with the current version.

Anyway, booze does not really explode. The barrel lights on fire and the booze evaporates into red clouds that sort of look like an explosion. I guess if all you want is fireworks it looks close enough (the fire will spread from barrel to barrel though it's moderately slow).

Edit: I guess your idea of a caged fire imp would work too, but be careful they are pretty hot and they can fly.

Any plan involving chained kittens and pyrotechnics is worth it, definately.

There are a few exploding minerals in the game, so stack those outside and stand back!

Also, "not cheating" I think means not using other programs to materialize handy magma into the air. :P

The ultimate mistake you actually could do while setting up magma forges is dig a tunnel to some exploding minerals on the way and not remove them before opening the magma vent.
I'm not sure how much of the mountain would collapse, but if there's a big deposit, your adventurer would feel pretty much like the Vault Dweller ( Fallout series ) if he/she approaches the site later.

New game goal: Demolition
Buy explosive minerals and dig a huge chambers deep into the mountain and light it up in an attempt to make as big a crater as possible for future acheological digs

Which minerals are explosive? and can they be detonated by anything other than magma/fire creatures?

Actually it's probably not a good idea for me to try blowing things up yet; I've only just managed to do some useful water works without drowning anyone, so messing with magma can wait a bit...

There are no explosive minerals, though coal, graphite, and uhm... maybe one other will burn if they come into contact with magma.

I'm not sure if unmined coal/graphite will burn or not - the wiki says yes but in my experience walls ignore temperature (wooden walls hold magma in just fine for example). will have to test it next time I find some.

I've seen a few people mention setting fuel veins on fire.

They apparently burn indefinitely... which is fairly accurate actually.

According to Smithsonian Magazine, "Scientists estimate that Australia's Burning Mountain, the oldest known coal fire, has burned for 6,000 years."

Gnarly.

Got the impression from wiki that they DO explode... need tests, I guess. Now where's my <Iron>...?

Quote please.

They don't explode.

Here you see the process. It's not explosion - red = hot booze vapors. However it looks like an "explosion" while actually it's steam. But it's very hot and can damage/set on fire creatures easily.

Why wont you build and aqueduct to above the burning thingy, pump magma up, place a floodgate, and open it when your ready to party?

Because people don't always set out on maps with magma. :P

I try to. Wood is a pain to divide for both smelting, barrels, buckets and beds at times.

Interesting fact: you pour magma on water, you get obsidian ( or maybe some other mineral ) and some steam.
Stone from aquifer, possibly?
