Dwarf Fortress is a game that asks to be hated. It is the embodiment of the gaming purist's derision for "casual gamers." I fancy myself a reasonably hardcore gamer - I prefer Call of Duty to Dance Dance Revolution; Grand Theft Auto to Farmville - but I suspect anyone more casual than a professional Starcraft player would be hard-pressed to find anything to like about this "game". 0/10.

I think this was meant to be a comedy thread rather than a serious discussion of reviewers and reviewing practices.

The infamous article at Ars Technica is a review as if DF was a released game.

I actually find it to be the opposite.

I very much dislike "hardcore" gaming scene and would not touch CoDs, Farcrys or GTAs with 10 foot pole, prefering games like DDR and likely spent more time gaming on ipad than anything else in past year.

Yet DF is awesome game for me.

No dick-waving about graphics (thrust your polygons and shaders in your ass, devs. I dont care for them slightest... I am not spending money to upgrade my PC for that.)

No achievements that force you into certain gameplay choices.

Total freedom. No internet connection needed, no cheat prevnetion or "thou shall not mod".

Actually interesting game premise.

I have yet to find hardcore game that does even one of those things, but many casual games that fit all of them.

That was a parody of a mainstream game reviewer confronted with Dwarf Fortress. All examples were selected for comedy value.

For me, Dwarf Fortress is my very favorite game, it has been for over a year now, and I doubt I'll ever find one I like better. Bless you, Toady One.
