Construction suspended; Creature Occupying site..
« on: June 20, 2013, 08:36:52 pm »

I was trying to build a simple wooden building. All I have left is the corner wall square. What my carpenter does, is he stands on top of the square to construct the wall, then promptly suspends construction because there is a creature in the way. There isn't a creature in the way, unless he is the creature blocking his own path or something. Does anyone know what's happening here?

This is a known bug. The only solution to my knowledge is to cancel the wall and redesignate it. Hopefully Toady will have fixed it in the next release.

There's safe. Then there's unsafe. And then there's the average dwarf fort, which remains unrated because the OSHA inspector flatly refused to go anywhere within a dozen miles of the place.

He also has to be able to reach the wall from a position like so

Code: [Select]
[X]
XOX
[X]

Where X is where the builder stands.

Cancel the wall and redesignate it; if the carpenter is in a burrow, let him out until the job is done.

I think that's a little more impossible than I'm likely to have time for.

I just assume my dwarves are simply too stupid or drunk to realize they're getting in the way of themselves.

Generally cancelling the construction and retrying will usually work, but not always.  Sometimes they'll be dead set on standing on an adjacent square; in those cases, you will need to clear the spaces around it before cancel/retry.

I suspect what happens is the problem job selects a spot for the dwarf to stand, but that spot is where another construction is being built, and that construction is completed before the problem job is started.  The problem job doesn't have its standing spot reevaluated; once the dwarf sees he can't stand where he wants to, instead of looking at other spots, he just gives up.  Remaking the job causes the old attempt to be forgotten and forces them to reevaluate where they can stand.

I've built a lot of walls on the surface in the past and have seen it a lot.  It tends to crop up a lot building walls in tight spaces.

Canceling and re-designating never works for me. I often have to dig out the tile underneath the offending project, then replace it (if needed) when the job is done. They can't occupy midair, thankfully.

I only have consistent problems on corners and next to ramps. Just from what you said, I'm imagining that all your buildings are horribly twisted and confused.

Aww, that's not nice. I never have consistent problems with this. My current fort is running into a decade or so now and I have encountered this problem less than five times. It just... never seems to be fixed by a simple redo.
