need a new tileset recommendation
« on: June 20, 2013, 07:51:26 pm »

I was pretty happy with the base tileset, but I just started engraving my fortress and it's filling up with happy faces. I can barely tell the rooms from the hallways, and it's going to be brutal trying to find my dwarves in there since they look almost like the walls.

Any tilesets out there where I'll be able to recognize everything more or less, but where engravings aren't a mass of smiley faces?

That's not the way it works, sadly.  DF is an ncurses based game, and as such, sufferes a 1:1 relation between a tile image, and a font character.  This means that an O with a grave accent on the top and a lever are forever joined at the hip.

I would *love* for toady to supply an alternative method of tileset invocation that lets a tile be called based on some more abstract feature, like "triangles", rather than linking it with the same ascii char used to show a ramp or a slope. That way an engraved wall or floor could use a different tile than the same one used for a ramp when the engravings aren't obscured.

The best solution I have for you, is to flood select the toggle engravings designations from the 'd' menu, then in d_init.ini, set "engravings start obscured" to true.

From (d)esignations menu, press v. Now you can toggle engraving graphics on and off. Try it out.

I tend to engrave carefully, only on select walls and rarely on the floor for this reason.

Googled ironhand... it looks pretty. Any serious reasons I shouldn't be using it?

There's a switchover time that's where you have no idea what's going on.

Anyway, somebody mentioned the key to hide engravings. There's also an init setting where you make engravings start obscured by default.

ironhand is my favorite pack. however his last official release is for version 34.07. if you dig backwards through the thread you can find someone did a n update to bring it into compliance with 34.11

You get any time you change tilesets. ;)

I play with engravings hidden.  You can still tell its engraved, but you have to actually loo[k] at the tile to see what the engraving is instead of your screen getting cluttered by the symbols.

There's also the Phoebus set. The wiki has a whole list of 'em at http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/Tileset_repository

Learn something new every day. Thanks a lot for this.
