Dwarfans
« on: June 20, 2013, 05:48:40 pm »

This is a simple post to suggest that at some point in the future dwarves (and other races) must occasionally abandon unwanted children.

The reasoning behind this is rather simple- With orphans, we could power our megaprojects WITH A FORSAKEN CHILD! :P

And now you know how perpetual motion machines work.

I can imagine how after a long war or something there will be much more children than adults. Most of the adult dwarves are dead. The king orders a giant childcare to be built into Armok-forsaken wilderness. Some very unlucky dwarves embark there and get only children as a mirgants.

Which is exactly why we need the ability to sacrifice those orphans and power our crazy death machines, its for the greater good you see.

Nothing stops you from feeding children to crazy death machines already.
But having something like that in the game mechanics itself would be one step toward "the game of raping and shitting dwarves" and that's not good.

fix'd it for you Di.

The topic makes me think about orphans and adoption during world gen though. Might be interesting to see a Human child whose parents were killed by goblins only to be found and raised by a Dwarf because the rest of the village is dead. It'd be like baby snatching, only nobler and with the snatching becoming saving.

In adventure mode orphanariums could be interesting to visit, not for the training dummies, but for adopting a child and retiring to raise them, getting materials for the matron, or just plain ol' getting a revenge quest from a 4 yr old kid.

Fort mode seems less like it could make use of it, cause the Fort takes care of all. But,  babies will wander around the map without a parent, similar to a crazed Dwarf, and possibly into danger. So, it'd be nice to see the bay taken care of by someone. People with above average altruism being more likely to adopt the bloody mess.

goblins snatch dwarves to save them from the crazy powered death machines that the dwarves build when they're smart enough to listen to the voices in their head

With the current system, only nursing mothers would be able to effectively adopt a wandering baby. It'd be a neat minor overhaul until Toady codes an all-new childcare interface.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

Actually, anyone can start lactating. Suckling on a nipple causes the brain to produce prolactin, as well as oxytocin, which causes lactation, the oxytocin just makes you feel good. The more stimulation the more prolactin, which also means more milk. Even men produce prolactin. So, it is possible, and reported, for men to start breast feeding.

I've thought about trying to produce to see how easy it is for a man to accomplish this. I think it'll be an experiment I save till I actually have kids though.

You can easily mod your Dwarven men to go all Dr. Venture. The fun thing thing to do would be to replace the milk with something more unsettling..........

getting a revenge quest from a 4 yr old kid.

The greatest story ever told.

"Hello there, child. How is your life here in the orphanarium? Would an artifact door make your life better here?"

"No, but you could kill the bastard goblin who killed me mum and dad."

I think it'd go a little more like this

Adventurer:"Hello there, child. How is your life here in the orphanarium? Would an artifact door make your life better here?"

Kid:"No, but you could kill the bastard goblin who killed me mum and dad."

Adventurer:"Ya know what? A little bad ass like you needs to be out adventuring. I'm gonna adopt you. Lets go kill some goblins, son."

A bit later.

Adventurer:"Which one is he?".

Kid:"He's the goblin in the back with the crossbow.".

Adventurer manages to kill 8 goblins before he gets shot in the head by the crossbow goblin, who is then killed by the kid.

Kid:"Damnit, I'm an orphan again."
