Since you don't have any GPS unit or suchlike, you put your fate in the hands of the network. It's been good to you so far, though getting anything other than news is a bit of an effort for you still. Your therapist said your aptitude with the thing will improve, you just have to use it consistently.

[-4] As you try to get into the network, you strain your mind with effort, attempting to get the dang netlink to do what you want it to. After quite a bit of trying, you suppose you succeed. Instantly, your mind is filled with the entire map of the world, with every level of detail flashing to your brain at once, filling it with such information as the location of a ruined apothecary in the abandoned hulk of Bandar Seri Begawan and the distribution of leisure centers in Bantu City. The whirlwind of information floods your brain, causing a feeling not unlike that of your head splitting open and exploding, though fortunately this does not reflect reality quite entirely. Instead of your brain exploding violently, you just feel very faint, slumping up against the railing as the world floods with nothing but pain.

...

Man, this hurts. Feels like somebody performed head surgery on you with a broken bottle. Plus you now know lots of really useless geographic trivia for some reason. Like, say, the fact that the West City Alcohol Abuse Consultation Center is located right next to a medieval-themed sports bar. Heh. Though you do wonder what happened, really. And what's with this lack of news? Usually there's a whole lot of news when you check the link, now there's nothing. Maybe you should get a checkup.

Wait, shouldn't you be at work? You were supposed to be the hostess today! The other Jasmines were counting on you! How did you even get out? Where are you? Why are you wearing a chemical suit? What the hell is going on here? And why does the air seem so thick? And why does your belly hurt so much?

This is all very confusing to you, not to mention worrying. You've never been known to black out. You wonder how you could possibly get home. You also wonder if you're in trouble. You're not sure how they punish engineered people for skipping out on their duties for no adequately explained reason.

Skim over news titles of the past day.

Call up Jasmine Support Hotline. Weep and sob. Tell them your current situation. Attempt to recover today's memories. Poor Jasmine. She is so gonna die.

Faced with an absolutely dire lack of context, you skim over whatever news you can access.

[-1] You're not entirely sure how to do that, though. You think that the newslink keeps an inbox sort of thing, and when you read a certain item of news it is immediately wiped from the newslink to make more room and prevent eventual memory overflow. You do not quite recall what the maximum limit was, but you suppose it wasn't too low. Your therapist said that you should regularly check the news, otherwise the newslink's activity might put a damper on your short and intermediate-term memory.

Speaking of memory, it's pretty awful that you don't have any of the few hours presently. You wonder if you can somehow recover them. Thinking about it, you would probably have to say no. Judging by the way your head hurts and the lack of any other symptoms of brain damage normally exhibited, like perception impairment and such, you bet it was probably the netlink acting up. They did tell you to be careful with that thing, since it is directly and permanently hooked up to your delicate brain.

Okay, so... maybe there's a hotline for such a thing? A specialist you could call and talk to, get help for your memory issue and where to go now. You do believe there should be - your therapist even gave you instructions on how to contact it, you remember. Specifically for a situation like this, you believe. Now... what did you have to do to reach it? You recall having to close your eyes, relaxing completely, then thinking a certain combination of words. It was easy to remember: "I am confused, alone and I need help. Somebody help me, please."

"You are not alone, Jasmine," a voice you recognize as your own comes into hearing. "I can help you. You can help yourself," your voice says calmly. "What is the problem, dear?"

"Well," you start to explain to your voice, "I don't remember what happened to me, I just woke up in a chemical suit, and I'm hurt, and I don't know where I am or how to get back to where I work at." As you speak, your situation seems to hit you fully at last, and you begin to sob. "I'm confused, I think something's gone wrong with the implant, and I think I may have skipped work on accident, and it was a really important day, you see," you continue, getting into a full-blown weeping session at the end. "I was going to talk to Ms. Bartolucci, keep her company, make sure she had a pleasant time, and I think I've failed! Why else would I be here?"

The voice in your head, sensing your emotional state easily, tries to calm you.

"Shh, don't worry, Jasmine. I'm sure it will be alright. Your newslink has malfunctioned, but don't worry. Only a bit of your memory is gone. You are still the same person you were, and you are still capable of everything you could previously do, and I am sure your employer will care about you no matter what. You just need to know where you are and where you should be. You are currently at the Exemplar Chemical Corporation plant, and you work at... Bartolucci Data Processing, yes?"

"Yes..."

"There should be a train tunnel above you. Follow that, the biggest one, along the walkways, and when you see a tall building in the area with the letters FNC on it, you will know that you are close. Bartolucci Data Processing is right next to it. Do you understand?"

You suppose you do. Not like the directions are complicated.

"I do understand."

"I know you do, Jasmine. You are quite clever and capable, and always have been. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Now stay safe. You know how to reach me if there's trouble."

You smile a little as the voice cuts out, leaving you alone with your thoughts. You feel better, you think. It helps to know that there's at least one more you out there, watching out so you don't get lost in the darkness.

You, glad that you have a helper with a kind word always handy, decide to do as you're told and head along the big train tunnel until you're safe and sound. You keep your eyes on the tunnel, following it through the complicated tangle of walkways and ignoring any branching tunnels on the way. It doesn't prove very difficult, and eventually you feel you're in a familiar place.

You look up, and there it is. A huge skyscraper, the letters FNC lording themselves over every little bit of possible competition in the neighborhood. You observe all around yourself and see a smaller building. Though it is mostly unremarkable among the other, much taller buildings in the business district, you know for certain that it is the Bartolucci Data Processing building. You'll never forget the shape of it, the feelings you had when you first approached it three months ago. It's one of your fondest memories, actually. After a bit of walking through the streets, you have finally reached the doorstep of the building.

It seems like all the windows and doors are covered in shutters, unfortunately enough. You do see an intercom, though.

Check the news on Mannkorp, and ask for permission to enter over the intercom.

Oh, thank God. Finally there's news.

Seems like Mannkorp are finally planning to do something with their last year's unusual acquisition of Australia. Or at least that's the general impression one gets from the fact that they seem to be ordering the construction of facilities there. Executives of Mannkorp haven't been reached yet, but apparently there's evidence of construction happening in the abandoned parts of the continent. Extensive construction, from the looks of it, and the single source of these reports indicates that they are probably building an R&D center complete with a wide-area test site there. The governments of Nippon City, current overseers of the continent, haven't corroborated or denied the report's accuracy.

Huh. You didn't know people could just buy up whole continents like that. Of course, Australia's been largely abandoned for a long time, but still.

Anyway, with your craving satisfied, you go and speak a message into the intercom.

"May I enter?"

"Certainly, but you'll have to identify yourself first. Fully, you know. You sound like a Jasmine Thyme, am I right? Could I have a model number, please?"
