"No thank you, I'd rather not," you tell Jerry.

"Well, suit yourself, then," Jerry says, having a pill himself. He then gets comfortable and looks at the ceiling as he hums a tune you find hauntingly unfamiliar. Having chosen to undergo self-inflicted depressant deprivation, you look for something about world crisis responses.

After seeing that the news aren't particularly helpful, you start checking for the specific crisis response times for particular corporate services. They like to brag about these things - make a call and get extracted, no problem at all. Let's see... you know that the company uses the services of Greenwich Lifesaving International. Comparing response times, you find that this might not have been the best choice on the company's part. Yeah, nobody really attacks data processing joints anymore and there aren't that many emergencies to worry about with the 100% engineered workforce, at least none that the in-house staff couldn't normally handle, but man. You really wish Ms. Bartolucci had spent more money looking out for this sort of thing. Greenwich is one of the cheaper providers, and they say that under normal circumstances they can extract you from most unfortunate situations in about 30-40 minutes.

However, since the entire city seems to be suffering an unprecedented crisis, you're willing to bet it's going to take longer in this case. A lot longer. Oh well. Better make oneself comfortable with some news. The Nuclear Ballet thing, that seems interesting.

Hey, it turns out that the show is exactly what you might think - those old nukes are finally being put to use (though in a heavily modified fashion) in what was to be the finest fireworks display this year, set to be performed over the mostly-empty fields of Mongolia. Visionary Lawrence Baptiste calls it a "vivid reimagining of the now-cliche mid-20th century period drama as a wild explosion of the all-consuming nuclear fire that never came, leaving only disappointment for its ardent admirers the world over, the fears of the old world given shape, form and power". The main actors would be nukes, modified with sophisticated guidance systems to move with perfect precision and panache never before seen by the world. Tickets were sold out years ago, though people who didn't buy the Optimum Viewing Vouchers can still get the cheaper edition without most of the more sophisticated viewing equipment apparently required to get "the full experience as it was meant to be seen".

Anyway, the whole shindig has been postponed for a week due to the unusual nuclear suicide performed by fellow artiste Joseph Greenthaal, claims Baptiste. He also claims that any who doubted his intentions and readiness, as well as any who tried to stop him on moral, ecological or historical (many have expressed negative feelings about the fact that the actual, original historical artifacts were altered and will now be exploded just for one show), are but silly philistines who clearly cannot appreciate the uniqueness of such an event.

Well, that was certainly weird. Moving on, you approach the false hobo, interrupting his didgeridooing (or whatever they call it) session.

"Excuse me, good sir, but I have been wondering for some time already: what made you take up panhandling as your vocation in life?"

"Oh, don't be silly. I'm not a panhandler. I'm a busker. I evoke an atmosphere of mystique and exotica in this fine station and several others. Employed by the train company, I am. Was built to be a musician, actually. Of course, not all of my line are employed like this - some play live music in restaurants, I hear. And others operate in bands! Some even do commercials - I saw one once! I dare say they looked rather good. Almost as good as I do, in fact."

As you listen, you look around some more. You still can't see jack in the dark. How awful. You're also running out of news rapidly.

At sometime just after noon? Or at least, after lunch ... well, I guess a nap wouldn't be entirely out of the question.

Also - busker! I knew that ... I'm embarrassed now.

Finally, may as well check the rest of the news before napping, and after asking or owner if she needs anything.

"Ms. Bartolucci, do you need anything?"

"Freedom... happiness... not being trapped in a train station... many things."

Ah, so nothing you can provide. Very well. What's the other news about?

Well, one is essentially a report that scientists predict the intensification of earthquakes in the Mediterranean area as well as an increase in volcanic activity across the world. Not like this really bothers anyone overmuch - most buildings these days are largely earthquake-proof, but still, some damage to populated areas is likely to result. The city councils are going to take additional measures to prevent potential problems as well, so this isn't really exciting or seemingly apocalyptic as one might hope.

To round off today's news, it appears that the world's police, miniscule as it is these days compared to the large security forces of the corporations, has become purely composed of engineered people on every level from ordinary street peacekeepers to the administrators and even the chief peacekeeping posts are no longer held by a natural-born person anymore. This has had a very positive impact on police efficiency - street crime is at an all-time low these days, though some say this is because much of what used to be street crime is now completely legal and provided by corporations, most notably drugs, prostitution and racketeering. Now there's just rapists, murderers and common thieves to wrangle, and even those have become rare due to the lack of a generally dissatisfied and disadvantaged working class - it's all engineered people these days, and those are largely owned by corporations and given specific, narrow jobs with little room to maneuver and do potentially illegal and image-destroying things (as far as we know, anyway).

Well, with the news done and over with, you decide to take a nice nap. Luckily, the train station floor is reasonably soft, so you fall asleep soon enough.

You've always had a bit of a problem with sleeping. Well, not sleeping, exactly. You can sleep just fine. It's the dreams that you find strange. You've heard that normal people, engineered and natural, dream of things they know about, things they've seen and things that bother them. You don't. When you dream, you fall into a constant stream of information, a sea of images that are funny, disturbing, intriguing or amazing, with no clear connection between them. Sometimes you dream completely randomly, sometimes it's a set of information about a specific thing. Sometimes, and this is where it gets strangest, you dream of things. Not the things themselves, but what they represent. They all seem to relate to fiction, how fiction is written and how it appears in works of all sorts, not to mention in life, which art is known to imitate. When you wake up from those dreams, you always feel peculiarly detached.

This time, though, you dream of ancient felines in odd poses making strange expressions and unusual statements you do not readily comprehend. It feels strange, almost as if you're outside time, or at least in a place where it does not exist. You spend some time here, visited by felines of all sorts, but before you can leave, you are pulled out of the dream.

The first thing you notice is that Ms. Bartolucci isn't lying on the floor anymore. And Mr. Love has also left his previous position. Even the busker is gone. You see dark shapes moving toward the train tunnel, some of them having peculiar glowing orange points on them. You hear whispering from their direction, though you can't make out what it is. You also smell something like burnt rubber, as well as the unusually strong scent (probably one of those weird colognes) of Jerry, which hasn't left the area just yet.

Ah, great, they are being taken by the CHUD. And they left us behind.
Look for Ms. Bartolucci. Call out "What's going on? Where are you going?"

You get up and rapidly approach the shapes, determined to know what the hell is going on here. As you get closer, you notice that the shapes are all people - your owner, Mr. Love and the busker are all with them. But there are others, too, eight in total, look to be wearing standard-issue dark blue environmental suits, all bulky and obscuring, their identical faces looking at you with varied expressions.

"What's going on? Where are you going?"

One of the suit-wearing people shakes his head disapprovingly.

"Shit, she woke up," another says.

"Told ya she would, the way you were traipsing about," one to the left replies.

"Guess we take her with us, then. Come on," he says, beckoning you with his hand.

"Shoulda-" Jerry begins to speak, but is interrupted by one of the suit-people, this one looking slightly more... aged than the others.

"You shut the fuck up until we allow you to speak, you hear?"

Jerry shrugs, rolling his eyes. One of the suit guys turns to you with a kindly expression.

"Now, Jasmine, we need to know one thing before we help you and your friends here. First, can we count on you to keep quiet about what you saw and will see here today?"

The others look at you expectantly.

You decide to take a preemptive stance against any violence these fellows might hope to perform.

"Only if you don't hurt my master. Or Jerry."

The kindly-looking fellow smiles at you brightly.

"Of course we won't hurt them. We're not criminals, you know. We're going to let them go, actually. We know where an exit is, actually. Come on, we'll show you."

They lead you and the group together into the tunnels, about half of them in front, half of them covering the area behind. As you walk quietly, you check the news about the chemical plant.

Oh my. The essence of the latest info is that the chemical plant is still proving very difficult to contain, and authorities are considering just boxing the whole thing in, otherwise the nearby area will be flooded with various powerful irritants, carcinogens and, as was recently discovered, even certain neurotoxins in particularly close areas. It is predicted that the pollution will continue for at least a week unless drastic measures are taken, and the sealing is currently pending approval by the council, who, as always, remind people to stay calm - the situation will be brought under control soon.

The guideway itself is rather comfortable to walk on, and you believe you've only been walking for about ten minutes when your kindly guides collectively stop. One of them quickly excuses himself and steps away from the group, running off in a different direction. Possibly put off by the awkward silence, one of the guides speaks.

"You can chat if you want now."

The aged one shakes his head. The speaking one looks at him.

"Well, there's hardly any harm in it now, is there?"

"Yeah, whatever. Go ahead, guys. Speak or something."

"Just don't ask us questions."

You share a glance with your three current companions, who don't seem particularly inclined to speak.
