Has the Long Patrol bug been fixed?
« on: June 20, 2013, 06:13:20 am »

G'day. I'm a new player, and just set up my first military (a mere three dwarves).

I want to train them, but I noticed there was a bug mentioned in the wiki that soldiers get unhappy from Long Patrol Duty when training, when they're not supposed to? http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/mantisbt/view.php?id=3190

Has this bug been fixed? I can't find confirmation either way. If it hasn't, what should I do?

(A secondary question: Should I train my dwarves unarmed to get their Wrestling skill up first, or just skip straight into armed sparring?)

Wrestling is mostly useless when dwarves are armed. If you don't plan on sending your soldiers into the fray without weapons, you should just skip the "wrestling" part.

DFHack -> tweak patrol-duty

DFHack really has tweaks to many simple bugs like this.

Fluoman: Alrighty then. I read in a guide that enemies can have the ability to disarm your dwarves and that Wrestling skill is therefore recommended, so I wasn't sure.

Matoro: Does that work in the Windows version of DFHack, or only the Mac version?

Edit- I'm not really familiar with DFHack in the slightest. I've used the 'tweak patrol-duty' command. Do I still have to keep DFHack? Will uninstalling DFHack now reverse the tweak?

It only lasts until you quit, so you need to keep dfhack around. Take a look at the dfhack.init-example file to see some of the other improvements and bug fixes and think about copying some of them to your own dfhack.init file.

Thanks for the help.

Oh dear god. A wave of migrants just arrived so huge that they more than tripled the population of my fort. And not a single metalsmither amongst them! :( nooooo~

As far as I know, every DFHack command works similary in Windows and Mac. Or if not, it's Mac which lacks commands.

I'd recommend you to throw DFHack into DF folder (like LNP and many mods have done), so it starts by itself every time you start DF.

Alrighty.

I have no metalsmither but really need to be able to start creating metal stuff like weapons and armor. What should I do?

Assign somebody the appropriate labors (weaponsmith, armorsmith, metalcrafter, blacksmith) and queue up some jobs at the forge. All dwarves are perfectly capable of on the job training, it just means that it takes longer and the product will be of low quality when they first start working. Eventually they'll gain skill and make better products in less time.
