Choosing Fortress Location
« on: June 20, 2013, 01:02:50 am »

When I am on the "Choose Fortress Location" screen and I am using the thing that allows me to choose the specifications for my location, I don't know what the X-Dimension and Y-Dimension options do, so can someone please explain that?

I believe you are asking about the UHKM controlls?  They change the size of the area you are going to have to build a fortress in.  Each tile in that screen (the embark screen) represents a 48x48 square in the normal game.  There is no way to alter this once you have completed embarking (except aborting during embark or killing the dwarfortress process before saving the first time)

It's faster to write "!!science!!" than any of the synonyms: "mad science", "dwarvern science", or "crimes against the laws of god and man".

In the find screen, the X and Y dimension change the size of the zone where you are looking for the other parameters.
Let's say you want a river with deep metals on a 2x2. That will be harder than finding a river with deep metals on a 4x4 because there is more room for metals in the 4x4  search.

the controls are case sensitive. the capitals will increase or decrease the area of your embark, up to a maximum of 16x16 in size. The default is 4x4. You should be careful when increasing this size too much. I have noticed that anything over 6x6 will slow your overall framerate (especially when your fortress is mature). The biggest killer for this that i've seen however is dwarf count. I am able to get 50 frames with 150-160 dwarves on 6x6 embark with a fully built up economy. It's a huge difference when playing on a 3x3 map with a 30 dwarf cap which I constantly get 200 frames regardless of fortress size.
