Elves are fine with eating each other, so they can't be made out of wood!

It's ironic how they always bring so much, but refuse to take any of mine...  In all my recent forts I don't bother with cutting wood.  I bring a bunch with me on embark and buy up all the wood from the caravans.   Apparently they will even magically bring you extra if you have "too little" vs your forts population.

At only 3pt a shot, it's quite easy to buy it all up.  if you're desperate for trade goods, buy as much cheap food from the caravan as you can when they first finish unpacking, and make it into meals quickly, then trade it back to them.  They'll never notice!  Though watch out that they don't leave before you get them back...

A magma smelter can make coke out of lignite/coal directly.  But other then steel, you don't really need worry about fuel if you have magma.  And you'd need flux for steel too.

Yeah... the only real reason you need wood anyway is for beds - everything else can be made out of multiple materials and orthadox means.

I'm absolutely positive you can mod in a reaction in the smelter to smelt an elf corpse into a bar (or ten) of coal and never cut down a single tree for the stuff.

You could always mod in the ability to make a bed that takes cloth and rocks or metal for a frame. Or, mod in a frame then take the cloth and frame to make a bed. I'm sure there's a mod floating around somewhere already.
