I haven't played since we all used to play on forsaken's server two years ago or whatnot. I remember Eric and I had a pretty sweet ice planet that was entirely flat for some reason.

Roll for damage!

I miss that planet...

Also; you can't make a salvage computer slaved to a weapon system. Just remember; salvage computer master race.

Combining anything with a missile slave system gives you a multiple-output effect that doesn't work very well because the outputs don't get randomized so beams will follow the same path every time. You'll wind up with areas completely stripped clean and others untouched. Like a microwave. However, this might not be too big a deal with a rotating rail block. Then maybe, hopefully it will fire in unique directions every time. Like a slightly better microwave.

How are the economic and trade aspects of this?

Do you basically just build stuff and blow up other peoples toys, or is there commerce and industry and people developing civilizations and such?

Well, this weekend I played quite a bit, and build a super mining ship, and ended up finding a few pirate bases.

Then I built myself a little missile ship, with pretty good shields, and a missile/missile system, so I got swarms of (rather slow) heat seeking missiles.

That worked really well for killing pirate ships.  However, when I took it against a pirate outpost it didn't even seem to touch the shield, and I ended up getting blown up by the waves of pirate ships it summoned.

Also, how am I supposed to go and collect these ships when more ships keep spawning? Do you usually put salvage modules on your attack ships, so you can salvage enemy casualties without having to actually get out of your ship?

And what is a good weapon for destroying pirate bases.  Also, is there any clue as to where the faction module that I have to destroy is hidden?

Decided to try this out, Did the tutorial, bought some more miner beams, mined some asteroids. Flew to a nearby planet and landed on it, mined some "lava" with my astronaut beam, sadly it doesn't seem to do anything useful. Mined some trees and plants too, they also don't seem useful.

Tried to mine a hole through the planet, after about 3 or 4 blocks down it was just the magma sea and I couldn't go any further. Too bad.

Unfortunately I can't really seem to get into it. I'm not sure what it is, I guess the spaceships just don't even look like spaceships at all and it's kind of offputting. Cockpit? It's a generic looking block. Reactor? another generic block. Mining beam? A block that looks just like the other blocks. etc. My ship was just so completely uninteresting to look at, which made it boring to build/modify

Too bad, because most of the other gameplay features are so much better then SE it makes me sad to think about.

You aren't trying hard enough if your ships look uninteresting.

I don't have the patience for or interest in minecraft style block stacking, is there another way to build things in the game?  pre-designed modules or blueprints?

I guess I can check out the free demo...

It has built-in copy paste features, advanced build mode makes even decent sized (100-200 meter) builds move pretty quickly, systems design and detail work is what takes time, if you use the tools provided, there is no 'minecraft block stacking' at all.

You could just download any number of designs from the main webpage.

Yeah, there's an in-game blueprint system, once you have a blueprint, it tells you how many of each type of block it needs. Then you add those blocks to the blueprint, once you have added everything you can spawn the ship, so you don't have to stack the blocks yourself.

However, if you don't go for minecraft style 'block stacking' you probably aren't going to stay interested in it for too long.  In its current early alpha state, the combat is far from balanced, and there's really no economy to speak of.  Mining is going to feel really pointless if you're not doing anything with those resources.

However, I'm playing it single player, and there is enough to do to keep you busy, at least for a little while.  I started off with very little, built myself a salvage ship, did some mining, sold some of the stuff, and made stuff with some of the other stuff, which I added to my little salvage ship, to get more stuff, to add more stuff, to make a bigger salvage vessel, to mine more stuff, etc, until I had enough resources to make and buy components to build myself a cool little missile ship.

I killed a few pirates, managed to recover one of the destroyed pirate ships, and took it back to my base as a prize.  I got cocky, tried to take on the pirate base, and got blown up.  So now I need to build a new attack ship...

There are trader fleets that run around. There are pirates that attack them and the players. Supply and demand at trading stations. Not much beyond that that's automated.

@Puke

Personally, I think this game is one of those high-potential games that could be really amazing, but just... isn't. The best part of this game is definitely making awesome ships, and if you're not in to building there's not A WHOLE LOT you can do. Even if you are in to building, the game is a bit of a turn-off, because what can you do with your magnificent creations?

The problem with single player to me is the total lack of progression

Until you hav enough shield to fight pirates you just get instagibbed. After that point you just farm pirates. Even giving them better ship only shifts the turning point but it does little to address it.

I'd really love just to have harder sectors the further you are from origin

I'm into building, but building functioning and useful systems rather than just making pretty things.

I fooled around with the demo for a couple hours, was sort of non-plussed.  Found mining a bit tedious and slow, navigation a bit irritating.

There seems to be some intelligence available, can I automate mining somehow?  Is there a good weapon combination that makes a more efficient salvage beam?
