Not with the old rapid-fire cannons you used on the eidolon, no; the weapons are still nerfed to 5 dps per block in the master and effect (but not slave weapon system - it doesn't give a DPS bonus apparently), and shields have actually been doubled to 110 shield points per capacitor block, and 5 SP/sec from the recharger blocks, with armor blocks also receiving a hit point increase. Right now the meta game favors either high alpha damage, which means the missile+damage pulse combo with an ion effect (which requires an enormous capacitor on your ship) or swarms of drones; a couple dozen small targets takes more time to eliminate than a single large target; the AI has a tendency to spread out (note there's no coordination here, it just happens), so the drones don't form nice little clusters. Combine that with turrets choosing targets based on range not difference in angle, and larger craft taking longer to rotate themselves to make a kill, and there's very little one can do to defend against drone swarms except to launch MOAR DRONES. A swarm of 40 drones can easily handle a single craft 3x their combined mass.
There's a thread for that now, if you want a better explanation of how the logic behind it works. The Eidolon isn't going to be able to instakill similarly sized craft anymore with the same weapons. Using the same number of blocks of any form of weapon (if only master computers are compared) will net you the same damage per second, but like I said alpha damage is the key right now, and missiles are the only player on that field. You could use cannons on the Eidolon for core drilling, but the punch/pierce effects have a soft cap of about 7 blocks depth or thereabout, so having multiple outputs with punch-through effects would be the way to go if you're looking for instant cannon-based core-drilling like we used to get on the server.
You could, however, turn the cannons into drone launch tubes to fire miniature drones. Which in my opinion would be fucking awesome.
But no, even now the game isn't very well balanced. I think the idea was for it to be balanced towards the defender, such that combat takes longer, but between alpha-damage missiles, drones, and AI being retarded, that doesn't happen.
However, my biggest gripe right now is that the launcher either crashes during download, doesn't start the second launcher, or the game crashes during load. I've redownloaded the game something like 20 times now, and still havent gotten to play with the release version.
