harddrive failures? Saddening. I was hoping to nag you about sending me a couple of the ship blueprints I made on the server again :P

I've been slowly recovering from my starmade-death and playing in singleplayer. Had a dream some nights ago, something about working on a small carrier. There were kerbals there, and I couldn't find my shoes for some reason, it was a strange dream. I decided to build the carrier I was working in in Starmade, and have finished the hangar bay and exterior landing wings. It's actually rather ridiculous-looking. I'm not sure I really memorized my dream properly, or maybe my brain didn't bother to come up with a reasonable, well-planned starship.

Hey guys, more Vanguard updates, at 3.18 million blocks placed the Vanguard is now unbuyable, coming in at a whopping 2.4 billion credits.  I estimate she's at about 50-60% done, six of her twelve super-capital turret mounts are ready (tho' the turrets themselves are absent) her shielding is still pretty light for such a gargantuan structure (7.5 million shields) I actually reduced her capacitor to make room for more shield blocks (down to 7.3 billion storage).  At the current pace of construction (and barring burn-out) she could be finished by Christmas.

Quote from: schema
just a little update on the progress. The new player model is almost done. I have redesigned and extended the system for 3d model handling completely to allow for complex animations and an easy interface. This means the new model system is completely moddable including custom animations,
Furthermore, the work on the new NPC system is also going well. There will be more info very soon about that.
Additionally some the system rotation has been redesign as announced to finally combat the disorientation when changing sectors from void to star-system. Also, players flying on a ship in gravity should now finally work as intended, so you hopefully won't have to fear anymore to fall out of the ship when it moves. The same goes for lifts.

Next update's looking pretty awesome.

At last, my evil lag situation is resolved, and StarMade once again becomes playable.  The Vanguard WILL be completed.

Why is this thread so dead? I've actually got to playing this lately, despite having it installed way before. And is the server fairly active still? I wanna do shtuff with other people.

The thread died mostly from a lack of Starmade updates. We all played it a lot for a while, and the common consensus was that it was fun, but it was worth waiting for bigger updates before investing more time into it.

Yeah, I'm personally waiting for the next big update to play again. Along with mobs and new corner wedges and gravity not being reset on sector change and all the various other improvements to the game code incoming, the newest blog post mentions that gravity blocks will be able to be used in any orientation, which means we can have gravity elevators without docking shenanigans, which means they can be installed in smaller spaces than we ever before imagined, including regular corridors. Not to mention the fact that you can now use the ceilings and walls of your spaceship as more floorspace.

Is the server up?

Well, let's say you're going away from Earth on huge spaceship and suddenly shit goes wrong and you have Super Mutants. Social Experiments prepared them for this.

Waiting for the next update to join the fray for the first time. Is the economy tied to the server?

The game doesn't have much in the way of a functioning economy, but recipe prices and, I think, the base prices of blocks can be set server side. And I'm pretty sure money and inventory are stored server side, or at least they don't carry over between servers.

so 0.101 is out.

build a ship with 4 salvage cannons and three anti matters. found pirates, got killed.

lost 84 salvage and 60 weapon blocks

so far I like it, even if I didn't understand anything about what was happening while in combat.

there were some pixellated things, I suppose pirates, and I was hitting them, as there were red flashes. they spawned on top of me, the pirate station was not yet fully loaded as I was approaching the sector.

anyway, I added a lot of thruster, but speed didn't exceeded 50km/h. is there a sort of cap or I am missing something about thruster configuration?

Unless something changed the default maximum speed in the game is 50.  And only the heaviest and most underthrustered ships can't reach that cap.   Even a core by itself without a thruster easily reaches the max speed in seconds.

Thrusters really seem more about acceleration than top speed, though the top speed can be adjusted somewhere in a configuration file.

P.S. Thruster capability also becomes relevant when trying to land or take off from a planet.  Since those have gravity, in order to lift off straight up your acceleration needs to be able to overcome the planet's gravity pulling on your ship's mass, but even that doesn't need that bulky a thruster block, and a bare core is still capable of lifting off unaided.

The red flashes were the enemies' shields deflecting your attacks. It was possible to defeat Isanths in a ship made from starting blocks with a good bit of flying, but it's near impossible now due to 100% AI accuracy.

Being near a pirate base will occasionally cause pirates to spawn on you.

The max speed cap can be changed in the server.cfg file. The default is 50.

so I guess I just need tons of shields and turrets and shied on turrets, that kind of thing.

is there any enemy scaling? like, if I put a huge amount of shield should I expect more pirates?

so, went to a planet, having 25 shield cubes and seeking missiles with an antimatter cannon, all embedded in hull with a layer of heavy hull outside. died as fast as the other time.

will take a bit to understand combat :/

In my playing I tend towards lots of turrets with small shields attached. The AI last time I played always aim straight for your Ship Core block, regardless of surroundings. With lots of turrets, they will wear down the enemies shields (being more accurate then I am) and the shields will prevent some damage from stray shots hitting them.

According to one of the load screen hints, pirates don't appear near stores so you could perform short ranged collections until you've got enough stuff to make something tougher.

The thing is, when I and I'm guessing many of the others here were playing, we all set off to the abandoned space stations and pirate bases looting them for pieces. Doing this you end up with lots of metal hull for building and selling to buy engines, shields and weapons in the 100+ range.

As far as I know there is no enemy scaling. They tend to attack in groups of 5-ish.
