Nah, I managed to get where I wanted to go after a bunch of slow jumps. I've started building a station with a shipyard and am currently trying to figure out the docking and turret systems.

remember to set it home for the invincibility bonus!

Is there a reason this game doesn't work on my computer? It lags to death and I can barely get it to function.

Try turning framebuffer off. I think that was the reason for unexplained mega-lag for me.

shop now don't accept things they have in excess so getting rich by selling truckoads of larimar is not a thing. however seems asteroids are richer and resources sell well, one mining trip got me 130k credits.

idk where the station is so I've just parked at the 2 2 2 shop for now. will be online later on for some more mining expeditions XD

I just spent a couple hours trailing NPC fleets as they puttered around. Followed a traders guild trade fleet. It had a couple relatively serious looking large corvette/small frigate escorts. The escorts got pretty far ahead of the cargo ship though.The scavengers on the other hand seem to have fragile and non-threatening junkers. I didn't actually pick a fight, but I didn't notice any with shields let alone armor

I always drop StarMade due to its weird complexity (love the concept, but for some reason can't deal well with the execution). But I guess I'll play it casually now that NPCs are up - it was pretty funny seeing Trader Mining Ships bumping their face into the shop.
It was also funny to see pirates using my old jumpship designs, along with a rotating mining drill, to attack my starter ship that had no guns.
Later on I saw NPCs doing trade runs (which shows on the map), so it's nice to have stuff happening.

I feel like I'm bad at this game, mostly because I don't want to put the time into designing ships and stuff like that. It's probably the only one sandbox game I always put down due to lack of patience.
Do people design all their ships by hand? I downloaded a few designs from 2-3 sites, but the newest ones seemed to be all from 2015 and maybe one or two from 2016.

Also, do anyone play this without the Faction Mining bonus? It feel so cheatsy, but I guess you get that bonus for broadcasting your position to everyone.

Right now I just play StarMade as a builder.  Once I've gotten to the point that I feel I've got a solid handle on the new mechanics (weapons, armor/ship HP, jumpdrives, sensors) I'll probably go back to playing it as a game.

I have to do without that mining bonus until I can afford to buy a station, yeah. With asteroids as resource rich as they are now its not too bad, and that bonus can be adjusted in the server config file.

I also build my ships by hand, because I enjoy building.
The starmadedock.net community content section gets new stuff daily pretty much, so there's no shortage of blueprints you can download and fill in in-game, and some of its very impressive. You'll have to have an account and log in, but that site is also the official Dev and forums site, so that's where you'd want an account anyway.

Oh thanks for the heads up. I think google brought me to some weird area of that site, because everything I had found was old stuff.
And I like building too..the problem is that I get too carried away with it, so it's choosing between either building or playing most of the time.  ::)

The other thing that also makes me very confused is how the 'progression' of survival mode works. You get that faction bonus, make a basic factory and now you can manufacture insane amounts of blocks. So I always feel like I'm either doing something right or doing something very wrong.
Is the survival mode just not balanced/further developed, or the game purposefully simplifies production to focus other things (like big ships and big fleets)?

Don't get me wrong, by the way, I'm just trying to make sense of how it all works and how it flows so I don't derp around too much.
Even though I have StarMade since day one, I'm an utter noob at it. I just know how most blocks work :P.

...By day one do you mean day one on Steam or the pre-alpha release in 2010?  The game is still undergoing massive changes, with elements being redesigned to better fit Schema's vision, so anything you have learned, or learn now, will probably be wrong in a few moths to a year, so don't stress it.

I played back in 2010 when it was damn ugly, but after seeing a bunch of updates I noticed the dev was serious about it and bought it (there was a time when it was free, though. Right?).
I revisit it maybe once per year, just so I can at least have a faint idea how to play and build things.
It's pretty crazy how it changes a lot, but I thought the massive changes had ended. Good to know.

I agree the build system is hella annoying compared to robocraft, from the depths or anything else really. the turrets are mad complex to set up and even more annoying to detail because once built blocks that would fit cannot be placed. still I like how simple adjacency makes things up, more than having set pieces to combine.

the game is completely playable with non turreted heat chasing missiles and lot shields, so there's that, a borg cube is completely viable.

The manufacturing and stuff isn't well balanced at the moment, games still in alpha effectively, so the devs are understandably more concerned about implementing the mechanics and handling the bugs that crop up than they are about balancing something which is going to be changed again anyway
