barrels and jugs for brewer
« on: June 19, 2013, 02:45:13 pm »

I found a tip either here in forum or in wiki to turn off barrels and jugs in furniture stockpiles ... and that worked for a while ... and then it didn't ...

I think I saw something about barrels being unavailable if they are currently being drank from ... how do I get full barrels moved away from the still to thin out the drinking line?

Side note: I cannot keep up with the immigrants in my "Play now" embark scenario .... just keeping them in beds is a full time job ... much less designating rooms or building and adding furniture.  Is there a way to slow them down without a 'lost friend' cascade?

To free up barrels and pots as much as possible, set up specialized drink stockpiles, and disable barrels (set the barrel count to 0) in all stockpiles except your specialized drink stockpiles.  Your full barrels will be moved to the specialized drink stockpiles.

As for the bedrooms... a bedroom for every dwarf isn't really necessary.  Just have at least one bed for every 4 dwarves, and put them all together in a big dormitory room.  The dwarves will be less happy, but not very much less happy.

in the d_init file you can adjust your population cap. I think the LNP or DFhack now can do it during the game too. That way you can have a say in the amount of migrants you're getting. If you really want to kill people off, there is a rather complicated way. Make an atom smasher or magma chamber. Just make sure not one bit of the victim will be left. Make sure the room you'll use for it is completely closed. In no case should there be any witnesses. If someone dies alone, without witnesses, they will just go missing and if you set up a slab in time (a memorial you might say) no ghost will appear to tell people he's dead, so people will keep on thinking he (or she) is alive, just missing, you know.

You can really do it only 1 by 1, no witnesses whatsoever. Two people in the same room will see eachother die in that fraction before they actually die and it'll be reported. This has been tested and I've seen it work with miners who didn't outrun the magma, or masons who built a wall from the wrong side. As long as there is no witness (pets are witnesses too iirc) and the remains are never found and no ghost appears, it won't cause unhappiness

Sort them with Therapist.  The social ones allow to be completely idle and jobless, so that nobility can establish itself; and the antisocial ones, toggle on hauling, strictly just hauling.  Be sure to setup another outdoor meeting area, before destroying the caravan for wood.  Use the inbetween ones, as you like, recruits, specialists, etc.

I did what Garath suggested, for a bit.  Now I just limit my pop to under 100.  Anything more and I go bonkers from the confusion and lag from all the extra entities.

With beds you don't have to assign them to a specific dwarf. All you need to do is make it a bedroom and the next dwarf who uses that bed claims it as his/her own.

I am still not getting consistent results for free drink containers ...
do I need to give furniture its own stockpile before toggling off barrels and jugs?
... if I dis-allow barrels or jugs is that for just the item or also for barrels or jugs OF things?
congruently: is setting max barrels for the barrel as an item AND for barrels OF goods?

and I still say my stockpile settings don't usually stick

I don't think I understand the question. You may turn furniture on and then turn off any category from stockpile settings. Jugs though are finished goods, I think.

Cool, but wouldn't this likely lead to tongues having a '[SPEACH]' tag, and thus via necromancy we would have nearly unkillable reanimated tongues following necromancers spamming 'it is sad but not unexpected'?

setting max barrels for a stockpile is only for barrels containing something. Empty barrels won't be stored at such a stockpile, nor do you need to have the barrels allowed to be stored there as an item for them to be used to store, for example, food

that'll unravel some of my confusion thanks

if you 'think' correctly, that may be a big part of my solution thanks

I'm in the process of sorting some confusing stockpiles out myself, right now.

I find it my feeder piles break, if I have more than one root type of product stored within it.  This is where I believe my problem lies, maybe yours too.

I had food pots AND barrels in one stockpile, and it was supposed to feed a brewery, but nothing put into it, and nothing got fed to the workstation.  The minute I limited that stockpile to just barrels, without food pots, it worked fine.  I'll setup a food pot stockpile somewhere else, instead of joining them into one pile and trying to feed them both into one workstation.

Space saving seems more difficult in these later versions of Dwarf Forts.
Sincerely, Knutor

You can reserve barrels for use in brewing. I think it's on the Stockpile selection screen. I like to have a minimum of 10 barrels reserved for brewing.

Hm... i am having similar issues (though it's not a problem really). I have separate stockpiles for ~9 different flavors and have noticed barrels often getting left behind near the still despite the stockpile being only a few squares away.

I dont think i've seen a reserve barrel for brewing, but will look for it when I get back ingame.

Point 5 explains reserving barrels for use in jobs like brewing.

I am nearly positive that my problem is not my barrel count or reservations ... I finally got my jugs sorted into their own stockpile and then removed the stockpile leaving them sitting on the ground ... brewer still refused to use them and kept reporting lack of food containers.  I am willing to entertain the premise that I have problems with my stockpiles but jugs sitting on the ground and 'no container' spam has me a little twitchy ... I'm going to tear down the still and restrict my brewers in case they are selling it to the goblins on the side and just SAYING they couldn't find jugs.  ... I wonder if pulling the stockpile out from under the jugs means I need to reclaim them ...

Brewers don't use jugs... they use barrels or pots.  Jugs don't get much use - they're only used in beekeeping and pressing.
