Dwarves using random materials for floor
« on: June 19, 2013, 10:47:24 am »

I had my dwarves build some floors over soil so I didn't have plants growing where I was trying to furnish some bedrooms. I swear I told them to use gneiss for every tile, but when I checked back later, I saw that they had usually done that, but there were several floors made of random types of wood, and even a few where they used precious coal! Did I give the wrong orders without noticing, or do they sometimes use materials other than what you tell them to?

Gave wrong orders, dwarves have zero autonomy when he comes to what they build things with.

Yeah, it was your mistake. An easy one, since the building material menu will put the topmost whatever is the closest viable material.

dfhack r3 has a plugin called automaterial that is installed automagically.  If you accidentally hit the wrong key while constructing floors it will pick materials for you.  Woo.

This is why I deleted that plugin.

automaterial? huh?

i have not updated dfhack in a while, and i see i need to kill this plugin ASAP when i do update, thanks for the heads up

i even use a single material stockpile for all stone crafts so that nothing ever gets built without me choosing what material it is in advance
ich, random color tables and chairs in dining rooms, random color constructed walls, so annoying... why would i want that to happen more often?

and my OCD aside, why would i ever want to build coal floors? that's just... what?

I know right?  I like my floors to be made out of soap.  That way they stay clean.  j/k.  But wouldn't it be cool if that worked?

the joys of [shift][enter] .... if it requires more than one material, I used to hit enter x number of times ... til I realized the list order changes ... same with placing coffers in rooms ... dropped a pigtail bag in a room by mistake once

I've taken to forbidding bags while I place coffers.

I've done this just because it's basically a requirement when using quickfort. Pause, forbid all bags, designate bedroom furniture with quickfort, unforbid the bags and unpause.
This is easier if you get the planning plugin for dfhack though. When planning containers it will only use chests and coffers.

You have to place your coal floors so that they touch a saltpetre floor on one side and a sulfur (brimstone) one on the other. Then set them on fire and ...
Yes, it doesn't actually work like that in the game, but it's the idea that counts. Come to our fort, visit the famous exploding floors!
