You are likely to be eaten by a grue
« on: June 19, 2013, 09:14:40 am »

You are in a cluttered basement. The dim ceiling light is on, giving the place an eerie atmosphere, like a dungeon (or a place that needs some better lighting). The walls are lined with shelves, and said shelves are lined with all sorts of technological knickknacks, curios and antiques. Some of it is in boxes, some is stacked higgledy-piggledy, some are full computers with all the expansions while others are mysterious bare motherboards and proprietary connectors that haven't been seen since 1999.

You think whoever put all this stuff here might have really liked computers.

Nah, probably not.

Judging by the yellowing of the plastic and quantity of walnut paneling, you can tell they are arranged in rough chronological order. Nearest to the door are some computers with optical disk drives in the now-standard tower shape, going backwards through computer history as the shelves wind clockwise around the square room.

An Apple II computer is set up with two disk drives in the corner, apparently ready for use but not powered on. A box of unlabeled floppy disks sits next to it.

Consider what the hell you are doing here. Also, how did you get here? Whose basement is this?

You are looking at your new basement because you just moved into this place. Your parents, irritated with all the money you keep making despite not going to law school like they wanted, have finally given you the boot. The big boot that bruised your still-throbbing bum when they kicked you out the door.

You got here by perambulating.

As stated, this is your basement.

Check for grues. Then look through the floppy disks? Assuming there are no grues.

Check for grues. Then look through the floppy disks? Assuming there are no grues.

Grues don't exist, silly. Besides, the lightbulb above your head would be enough to keep any grues away. You're definitely not still afraid of grues. Even though you overreacted, screamed, peed your pants, swore up and down you'd never use a computer again, had nightmares, and even asked Mom to turn the computer off because you were too afraid, you are most definitely not afraid of grues at the age of thirty-one.

Although the floppy disks initially appeared to be unlabeled, upon closer inspection you see that several of them do in fact have labels. Those deceitful brigands.

While half the disks are made out of the typical black plastic, several of them are made out of a gaudy pink plastic. These pink disks are from a local computer shop called Sugar Bytes that you used to work at, but quit because Tristan was a jerk and the boss refused to fire him. Stupid Tristan broke your Gameboy, that meanie. While the Sugar Bytes disks have a space on the label for writing information down, none of these disks have been written on, leaving their contents a mystery.

Many of the black disks have no labels, but others have crude masking tape-and-Sharpie labels, and a rare few still have the original stickers. Of those that have labels, boring office software seems the most prevalent, but near the back you notice a handful of games. One disk has Oregon Trail and a few other games you've never heard of. Another disk has Zork, a text adventure that you refuse to play because you play only the most cutting-edge AAA blockbusters and not because you had a bad experience with it when you were six.

What's this? One of the disks has been destroyed, quite thoroughly and apparently intentionally. It lies in a handful of pieces on the floor near the computer desk.

Do not play Zork.

You reach for the box of disks, but instead poke it ineffectually with the pair of scissors in your hand.

Wait... since when did you have scissors in your hand? You don't remember picking them up or why you might have needed them.

The Zork disk is missing. The disks have also been rearranged. Something's not right here.

Search for gremlins, grues, anything that is alive and capable of re-sorting, excluding yourself.

Psychoanalyze Disk Placement.

A disk with a compilation of shoot-em-up games is on top of the stack, showing a tendency towards aggression or even violence, but also a drive to succeed and be the best among your peers. Underneath that game are a few office software disks, showing that your outgoing persona mask a deep love of order and hard work. Several black disks with no labels are mixed into a pile of pink disks, revealing deep unresolved issues with your sexual identity.

Just kidding, they're scattered about with no rhyme or reason. Several game disks are now on top of the pile, though.

Freak out.

AWWWW FREAK OUT!

You put down the scissors and commence subconscious hand shaking and cold sweating.

Search for gremlins, grues, anything that is alive and capable of re-sorting, excluding yourself.

It's just you, unless you believe in invisible pink unicorns (I know I do). While searching, you notice that all the previously-boxed computer paraphernalia has been opened and arranged for use. You also notice that the Apple has been turned on.

There seems to be more broken plastic on the floor than there was a minute ago. You notice a copy of The Matrix- at least, the part with the title on it- among the wreckage.

Arm self with nearest firearm.

The nearest guns are in the sports store in town, and those are quite expensive as well as quite a car trip away. However, you have many large knives in the kitchen and decide to get one of those.

Several items of yours are broken. The copy of The Matrix shattered downstairs was apparently yours. A vase has been broken, and several plates have been shattered. Food has been ravaged and then left out.

The microwave clock says it's noon now. It was early morning when you opened the basement for the first time today. Something is really wrong here and it's starting to worry you. The Zork disk is not among any of the items out here, as far as you can tell.

You now have a large kitchen knife.

Attempt to break out of the Matrix. Should this fail, check the disk in the CD drive of the Apple II
