I have never noticed anyone asking ... and it seems an obvious question to me ...

does channeling out an area and flooring over it let you count the hives as having outside access? 

my bees are too fat to get out through a grate ...

from the wiki: "Construction of the hive is then done by a dwarf with the beekeeping labor enabled, and must be made in a tile adjacent to an outside tile." I have never had problems building them indoors ... and nowhere can I find an explanation of the IMPORTANCE of outdoor access

Considering my 30odd hives are all under roof I think the requirement is merely "above-ground" access, so yes walling them up and flooring over will work

Harumph.  The hive article has this correctly stating that hives need above ground access but the Beekeeping industry page had it listed as outside.  This has been changed

We still cannot put them in a cage, like other vermin tho.  And release the swarm when a pressure plate is depressed.  That'd be really fun in a confined space.  Watching them chase someone or something upwards, to the outside.

This thread reminds me of that Fire Ant boat, in National Geographic.  Ever see that, where cling to one another, like a soccer ball, to stay afloat, then cross streams.  Life finds a way.  Sincerely, Knutor
